Evening all , i'm into the market for a new graphics card , but i can't decide between a used 780ti SC acx ( 4 years warranty left) for 350€ or a brand new gigabyte g1 970 for 400€. I mean wouldn't the 780ti be the winner of these two in terms of raw horsepower? ( gaming in 1440p)I'm mostly concerned about longevity , will the 3GB of vram on the TI hold for at least 2 more years?

    I'd take the 970 personally.

Although the 780ti is the faster card the 4gb on the 970 would make my mind up.
Some games are using close to 3gb now and if you install mods then you can go over 3gb for sure.

Plus you get full DX12 support, MFAA and VXGI.

Thats a tough call. The 780ti is a bit faster but uses much more power. You couldn't go wrong with either. But if you will be considering sli with your psu. Get the 970. No way in hell you can go 780ti sli on your current psu.

It would be a no-brainer for me, 780ti is much faster, even more so when you take into account overclocking on both cards. A typical 780ti will overclock by at least 20%, a 970 only 10-15%.

A maxed out overclocked 970 performs the same as a stock 780ti.

Not true at all..... No card currently on the market has "full DX12 support".

Thank you all for your answers but don't the 3gigs of 384bit get utilized much more efficiently than the 4gigs of 256bit from the 780ti and 970 respectively ?

Youd think so, but no, due to the new data compression technique, that nvidia has taken into use with Maxwell.

I thought the same thing as you, and thought it would scale extremely poorly with higher resolutions, but tests show that it scales just as well (if not even a Little better) than 780 ti at higher resolutions.

Oh, and id recommend you the same thing as ive done to everyone i know - get a 970... if you want more power, get a second 970... if you want even more power, get a third 970 :)

My only problem is that i can't SLI without upgrading my Motherboard , so single card setup seems like the only way to go . So , 970 it is? for single card setup that is.

Idk where are you geting that but couple of last games showed that something is wrong with kepler cards or their drivers. 970 stock beating 780ti in everything while 980 is quite faster.

"something wrong with kepler Cards" aka nvidia intentionally making Maxwell seem better, by gimping kepler in drivers... i know, i should Wear my tinfoil hat, but its a generel trend i see with nvidia. When a new architecture gets released, the old architecture magically gets worse, as in loses fps / points in games / benchmarks.

Post Maxwell drivers gives me 2k less Graphics points in fire strike, compared to pre Maxwell drivers.

Which means that as drivers mature the 970 will outperform the 780ti ?

Generel thumb rule is always go for the new achitecture, unless its like 680 vs 750 ti.

well since you own two 780ti's i'm gonna trust your judgement and go for the 970 , thank you all for your input :)

    The G1 970 for sure;

    * Similar performance, sometimes better (esp. a good oc model).
    * Its new tech, meaning new DirectX support (extra eye candy and performance).
    * MFAA will for sure gain momentum.
    * Lastly the G1 series are really excellent, very nice stock overclock, reasonably quiet and I've never had such good temps.

Where do you think I'm getting this from?

    shall I continue?

OK so overclocking the 970 does take it past the 780ti stock but once you OC the 780ti, it'll be the faster card even though admittedly, there's not much in it.

    OP:

It's a tough choice. I personally got my G1 for a bit less than 400 and the 350 780ti makes it even tougher..

Looking at them performance wise - 780 is a little bit ahead, but frankly the 900 cards will be getting better performance as its a newer improved chip and nvidia drivers for 900 will only improve where the 700 series have pretty much reached their peak. IF you consider ever going SLi. I'd say 970, since the 780ti has been discontinued (it's just w/e stock is left now) so you probably won't be able to reliably find another 780ti to pair it with say.. in a year from now.

If i revert to pre Maxwell drivers, i gain 2k graphic points in Fire strike... thats all the proof i need.

    Errr what?

The Guru3d and techsport benchmarks for Dragon Age shows the 780ti faster in 1080p and 1440p

I'm not at all interested in what gamegpu.ru has to say, if you are, maybe you can go onto their forums!

I'm just stating the obvious. You the one in denial.

Nvidia did something to kepler cards/drivers. 780ti was faster than 970, now its not. Simple.
