I currently am using a 780 (Evga) and am wondering if there would be any benefits to upping to a 980. I know (I hate bringing this up because I see arguments all the time on this forum...) that games are using a lot more vram these days.

I don't plan on doing 4k... but I do plan on a triple monitor set up at the beginning of the next year. So I am wondering if it would be worth it to scrap the 780 and get sli 980's or grab another 780... sli that.. and call it a day?

    Thanks.

With your psu I wouldn't go sli 780. Sli 970 or 980 would be fine.

I went from evga 780 ti to galax 980 sli.

The performance increase was super. Well worth it imho.

I should have mentioned, if I decide to go sli (which I most likely will...) I will upgrade the PSU.

I understand the preformance from 780ti to 980 sli would be huge, but I am saying 780 sli vs 980 sli. Is it actually a worthy jump or am I better off saving the cash and buying another 780? I like to max everything out.

My 780 is starting to struggle at 2560x1440p, I keep looking at the 980 but I don't think it'll be enough of an upgrade. I don't want a Vram argument but I feel the 4GB is on the stingy side, especially as there's 6GB 780s.

If you're changing your setup next year then I would suggest waiting to see if nVidia or AMD releases their new gems.

I won't state all my reasons but I'm a single GPU guy, sli can cause too many headaches with badly ported games.

Synthetic benchmark 3D Mark 11. My EVGA GTX 780 SC ACX did 13,020 and my new GTX 980 SC ACX does 17,045. Mind you I have installed on a X99 with 5820K clocked at 3.9 for the time being. The six core helped a bit...to add more overall power. But about a 30% increase. Other synthetic benchmarks reflect the same...

    780 or 980,970

    Hi
let me throw this at you, then you can decide.
    I had 2 evga Gtx780 Super clock's and I got 2 Msi golden edition's Gtx970's
And they are out performing the 780 big time and in older games I just undo the SLI and all games are fine. I have a 144 Asus 3d monitor and can run at 144 no problem Believe me if I had not seen it with my own eye's, I won't have believed it

980 is just a decent upgrade from a 780, but 970 is a pretty bad upgrade path from a 780.

Price/performance the 970 is king though. Could buy 2 970 for what I paid for just 1 780ti. killer.

Get another cheap second hand 780, sell them next year and then get whatever nvidia/amd come up with, just thinking something with more vram maybe more helpful.

Another thing, is 4GB enough in the near future? or will nvidia have a card with 6GB early next year? maybe good to wait for that and then upgrade?. That's what i'm thinking. I don't think 4GB is enough.. more and more games asking for at least 6GB now.

Minimum 8GB. Any less and you will suffer

Yeah true. If you wanna play it safe, anything higher than the current Gen consoles is a safe bet. But we all know that nvidia won't have anything close to 8GB next year at least not without charging us a bucket load of dough.
