I ordered my x5650 to replace my 940 to squeeze a few more years out of it and I'm going to be popping it in this weekend to see what I can do with it. I know for sure to disable the EVGA EZOC and what not, but I didn't know if someone would post their x5650 CPU-Z with their OC so I can kind of go off that? I have an Antec Kuhler 920 so I will be water cooled as well (however looking to upgrade that as well here shortly).

I was inspired to update my I7-950 overclocked to 4.2GHz to am X5670 by reading these huge threads outlined here. One person described the offloading to Ebay of these ex-server cpus as 'manna from heaven'.
If you have an X58 motherboard, the latest BIOS supporting the Xeon microcode and the will to try - it's the cheapest upgrade out there to a hexacore cpu!

I got my X5670 to 4.2GHz with 1.31V on Vcore (after a few 0x1e bsods) with idle temps of 20-30C and max roasting temps of 60 ish which is considerably less than the I7-950 which hit 91C. This with the same cooler!

I tried 4.4GHz but went from 1.31V to 1.35V and it still wasn't entirely stable so decided to stick at 4.2GHz as the extra voltage which was going to be required wasn't worth it for an extra 200MHz.

I'm using a 200BLCLK, 21X multi with 1600MHz RAM at a voltage of 1.65 9,9,9,24,2T but I noted the warnings about the UCLK/Uncore frequency and QPI/DRAM voltage for the 32nm chips as opposed to the 45nm of I7-950s, so I started off at 1.5x UCLK and 1.25V QPI/DRAM until I got the cpu stable and then went back to 2X UCLK for performance but kept the QPI/DRAM at a safer 1.30V. I could try lower but it seems stable and, going by the advice, within safe levels. I was wary about using the 3200MHz (UCLK 2X memory speed) and 1.35V (QPI/DRAM) of my old I7-950 overclock. It can lead to internal memory controller failure if pushed.

It's a good wee upgrade and put off my decision about X99 until that platform becomes more mature!

    Good luck!

if you read most of the threads, the ones above and http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1820772&highlight=x5650
General consensus is there are next to no advantages on selecting an x5660 or x5670 over an x5650, yes the default clocks and multiplier are slightly different but the avg overclock across them all is the same and ends up being a how lucky you are to get a good chip.

Hello.. Can I use my standard non ECC memory with one of these Xeon LGA 1366 processors, with a non server motherboard?

Yes, no problem. Using my standard non-ECC Corsair Dominator memory here.
