I don't play (is that the right word?) Minecraft but if I did, I imagine that this is pretty much the worst news that I could imagine. http://www.guru3d.com/news-story/microsoft-pays-2-5bn-for-minecraft-maker-mojang.html
Lol 2.5billion for a gaming studio that has had only one game. I still can't see how they will make the cash back.
Lol, Notch criticizes oculus for selling to Facebook. Then sells to Microsoft. At least he owns up to it: Struggling with 42% of $2.5B.
Minecraft is still a huge seller and with all the non-gaming merchandise they sell now, they will easily make their money back. I see 5 year olds going to school in Minecraft shirts all the time.
I've never played it either but I would think this is a good thing, especially after one of the developers admitted he didn't want to be a part of it any more.
It made roughly ~$300m in revenue last year alone. I don't know if it will continue pace but I'm sure they'll recoup that cost eventually. My only question would be, what's the point? It's already available on Windows and X-Box and stuff. The only thing I can see is them putting it on Windows Phone but who is honestly going to buy a phone because it also supports Minecraft? I mean I'm sure Microsoft has a plan for it, but I just don't get it.
Well, selling out to M$ is far from as bad as to FB*. Because way M$ makes money on their customers is way different than FB*'s. And as far as Minecraft players are concerned, M$ made some really good games over years. None can say same about FB* and it's pay 2 win partners of web game industry.
Maybe Microsoft want to add it on their games portfolio for Xbox or WP. As WP store will have a few more known titles, maybe they wil gain some traction
My son loves playing minecraft we play it together (multiplayer) on a PC with a few mods to make it look a lot better. I Hope Microsoft update and improve the game the graphics need improving phone's and tablets can have basic graphics but on a pc I WANT more graphics options and visual improvements. But to be honest my son requests items and I dig and dig and dig and dig and get lost then dig some more.
So he can spend the rest of his life vacation to vacation, with money that could support 300 generations of people. What a guy! I hope he donates it all, eats some dicks and then remembers what "struggling" is like. edit Short term it's a stupid idea because most people are pretty burned out from Minecraft (excluding kids and Let's Players). Long term, they hope to milk the franchise for the next 50 years.
Also, I'll bet my nuts Microsoft will make Minecraft Directx dependent, thus making it only available to Windows, Xbox and the Windows Phone.
Grtz to Notch Why does one get into the business, to get rich ... I guess he got what he wanted. I would be the same, no bad feelings, just jealousy
I dunno even at £300mil a year (at least that is what someone said they made last year) its still gonna take a decade for them to break even and that's assuming the game continues to hold it's popularity. Too be honest doesn't bother me at all I couldn't give a flying fook about Minecraft or what Microsoft plan to do with the 'franchise' but it does seem funny, guy rants about Occulus selling out to Facebook 6 months later same guy sells out to Microsoft. Mind you 40% of 2.5billion you can be as big a hypocrite as you want I guess.
The guy already had more money then he knew what to do with. I would have done the same thing if I were him.
I highly doubt they will mess with the current game it too much. They are buying it because it is successful, they are not going to radically change it. I anticipate all the current talent in the company will wait till their shares can be sold and leave. The company will then become a shell of what it was and keep churning out games using the same gameplay just like what happened with Bungie.
