ok so i had a R9 290 Tri-X that was freezing my pc when i was watching videos and using the card to render sent it for RMA and waited 35 days for them to give me another card, and now i replaced it for a R9 290x Gaming, thing is, playing Dark SOuls 2 at 1440p on the old card and same performance top temp was 66°C, and with my MSI the top temp is 89 C° and this is with 14.4 drivers, if i go to 14.6~14.7 the temps go to amazing 93C° and all this with a custom fan profile(at 85 C° Fan speed is 95%) can anyone with a similar card tell your temps? is this a problem with the MSI R9 290X Gaming Oc or Fan/Thermal paste?
Mines fine, doesn't go that high, overclocked to 1080/1300, and with the fan on auto, only goes to around 80-85. The higher temp is a known problem which AMD are looking into, was posted by an AMD rep on another forum, when asked about it, but i forget which forum it was now. EDIT: I found it, post #144 :- http://www.overclock.net/t/1501216/amd-catalyst-14-7-rc-driver-for-windows-out-now/140 Could give the 13.12 WHQLs a go (which im using), as they are fine temps wise. EDIT: Forgot to say, im using custom 2D clocks of 515/625 as well, so my idle temps 51/52.
nice, someone with the same card, so budd, i am on factory clocks, and on 14.4 on Dark Souls 2 1440p the temps go to 89 C°, on my old faulty 290 Tri-X which had the same performance (60 fps all the time locked) the max temp was 66 C°, thats 23 C° more for the same performance, with the new drivers things get out of control and go to 93 with the fan maxed, i alredy sent MSI a support ticket but i dont think my retailer will allow me to change the paste, what do you guys think? faulty? i will try 13.12WHQL
Does sound like it could be faulty, if its even hitting 93 with the fans maxed. May be a daft question, but have you checked the fans, to make sure they are both running ok, was going to ask about case, airflow etc..., but then thought, all that must be fine, as you said the Tri-X you had was only hitting 66, so that can be ruled out as not the problem. Still could be worth giving the 13.12s a go, just to rule drivers out, as i found all drivers after those increased the temps a couple of degrees or so, im only using the 13.12s though, as the later drivers don't seem to like Metro LL which im currently going through. Run DDU as well (if you don't already), to fully clean the drivers out before trying others.
Seems like it could be a defective chip. If that's the case not much you can do. Had a problem like this with an 580, even removed heat spreader and applied tim to chipsed and it would still go into 90's even with fans at max. But you should try other drivers I guess just to be sure.
i did look the fans and they seem to be at max, i have a HAF 932 with a H100i(pulling the air inside) 4 side 120mm coolers pushing the air outisde, a front one pulling the air inside and the back one pushing the air outside(corsair high end cooler), what is bothering me is that in many games my temps are 15 c° higher than the 290 Tri-X with the SAME performance(vsync 60 stable fps) with the same driver 14.4, and i used DDU.
still a bit hot imo my 780 idles at 29-31C, the coldest gpu so far and here I was thinking my old 570 TF3 was cool at 37C ^^ OT, the only great custom R9-290x models seems to be Sapphire Trix or VaporX - especially this vaporx.
Both my MSI R9 290X cards had a similar problem I fixed it by checking that the thermal pads over components were correctly seated because on both cards they were out of alignment, I guess the pads could have shifted in transportation or maybe a manufacturing error but now i have adjusted their position and redone thermal paste they run much cooler in crossfire with only 2 -3 degree C difference in load temp compared to a 13 degree difference befor i fixed them. Hope this helps.
those MX are the best right? nvm i have the MX4 here i though it was the MX3 but its the MX4 so i am good, i am still waiting on MSI to reply and then i will contact my retailer and see if they allow it, but i think it will be VERY hard to get the retailer to allow this even if i record it, they will simple ask me to send the R9 back to them lol.
bro could you tell me your temps while in menus? like in Watch Dogs or AC4? i am getting 75 C° just by sitting on Watch Dogs initial menus, before even starting the game at all, anyone else finds this odd? this happens at AC4 too, also Crysis 3 maxed out(SMAA 4x) 1080p is getting 88 C° with the 14.4 too.
When i used default 2D clocks, i was around 41. I don't have those games, but i guess its normal, for how much your GPU is loaded while in the menus.
i see, thanks bro, now i will just have to wait for msi to say something, but something is really off, Dark Souls 2 at 89 C° is too much, same with crysis,it should be way lower considering my fan speed.
if you put it on say 50-60% speed the temp remain high? in other games its the same temp? maybe you need to replace again that card with Sapphire or Gigabyte card, with tri fans. imho the best card are with tri fans.
The X version has more bits lol, probably enough to create more heat, that and ambient temps will be different each house
