Default Need help to fix endless page fault BSOD at boot - 08-13-2014, 23:00 | posts: 139 | Location: Rushden UK

I am trying to find a way to clear up an OS installation I have which is broken. It happened after EDIT Windows update. Fix found see post #18.

I Alt F4d out of a pretty dodgy game (as in dodgy coding).

Win7 aero failed to reinitiate on the desktop (Win7 x64 Home Premium) and I had a grey taskbar and there was some kind of critical error which I dismissed and decided to restart to clear up the mess.

When I restarted I was greeted with a BSOD bugcheck 50, "page fault in an unpaged area" error code 0x490.

So I tried safe mode and last known good configuration and got the same.

It finds the boot.ini fine and gets to the swirly wirly things and then goes black, monitor goes to zero input and them I get the BSOD.

I managed to get the repair mode working, tried to fixmbr from command prompt on the disk which is broken and it completed successfully but would not boot with same BSOD. Tried chkdsk and it reported OK, ran out of ideas.

I have a 2 month old backup on a spare drive which I am using to write this on the same machine so I have access to the broken OS from this one. I tried to use this one to reset the page file to zero on the bad OS disc. No help.

My guess is it was a foul up with the video RAM due to interaction between the crappy game software and the AMD driver which has left a record of a bad location somewhere and when it tries to boot it calls that bad location has a BSOD and stops there.

full error report from failed repair was

unknown bugcheck = Bugcheck50
parameters = FFFFF901C06457D4, 0x0, FFFFF96000012CCA3, 0x5

repair acction : system files integrity check & repair
result : failed. ErrorCode = 0x490
time taken = 187888 ms

I think those long numbers are dodgy RAM locations and I need a way to clear out the bogus RAM locations for the boot process to go ahead, anyone got any ideas how to do that?

Try deleting everything out of C:\Windows\Temp and C:\Windows\Prefetch on the messed up install.

Also try deleting the swap file all together. It will remake a new one when it boots up.

checked the disk sorry forgot to mention that, have added it in. RAM has been rock solid for a couple of years now, its just software I am pretty sure of it, caused by that game and alt F4 with aero failure.

reinstal is obviously the last thing I want to do which is why I am looking for a fix. I have a ton of games set up nicely and I dont want to reinstal tham all for a stupid memory location glitch.

I am thinking there has to be somethign I can delete.

Just open the minidump(or give the minidump to letting the other for checking it) and see what did it said.

If there is no minidump, then it is hardware issues.

Thanks cyclone I tried all those and sadly failed.

Didnt have restore turned on.

Thanks for the links Tj but I think mine is corruption in the boot data rather than hardware.

No minidump but cant be hardware as I am using the same hardware on a different backup disk.

The failed disk is still perfectly good for reading data and chkdsk passes it 100%. Mystifying but this BSOD is a boot error not a hardware error I am pretty sure, so it doesnt get time to make a minidump.

Well thanks for the suggestions everyone, its right you have to check the obvious first but... if I sound over confident saying its not hardware bear in mind I have a recent clone doppleganger disk which is working fine at the moment on the same hardware and its not causing any BSODs, which is a 100% repeatable boot error with the one disk only and that disk hardware checks out OK as well.

If the hardware was causing the BSOD it wouldn't boot the clone 100% OK. What caused the boot corruption idk, but ongoing hardware failure is ruled out imho.

Its not dumping to the root though, but I found a few minidumps from the clone boot following on from a BSOD on the failed disk, it sometimes brings a minidump error report.

I need to sleep, maybe I will think better tomorrow

It don't point to any driver, sadly.
So it is mostly likely a faulty RAM or CPU cache or GPU RAM, not software.

I will said that you should run Memtest86+ first for checking the RAM, as it is always crashing now, it should be showing up some error in a short time.

Of cause it is better that let it run for at lease ~8 passes or error coming out first.

This is also some good info that what you should do, even the OP in that thread in the end found that, the RAM is the cause.
Quote:
Bug check 0x50 usually occurs after the installation of faulty hardware or in the event of failure of installed hardware (usually related to defective RAM, be it main memory, L2 RAM cache, or video RAM).

Another common cause is the installation of a faulty system service.

Antivirus software can also trigger this error, as can a corrupted NTFS volume.

And ya, you should try safe mode too, but I guess it should be showing nothing.

Thanks for translating the dump BenYeeHua. I am grateful for all suggestions and it never hurts to check hardware. To rule out the hardware error I will run memtest86+ usb for a while just to be sure. Will have to let go of the internet for a few hours!

In the meantime, as I mentioned in the OP the broken drive volume won't boot into SAFE mode or any other F8 boot method successfully. Though it did start an ntbtlog.txt in case it helps anyone form an idea.

I will put memtest on while I sort my breakfast.

UPDATE has passed one full pass of memtest plus 41% of another pass without errors, will test some more later but RAM is still going strong and for reasons given it does not seem to be a hardware fault.

So it can be caused by RAM corrupt data saved to Hard Disk, or the Hard Disk is having issues, then the system file is corrupt.

You can just Google 0x490, it has many difference case for solving this error code.

Anyways, how is the RAM test going?

heh fine just fine, my memory stress test has Kerbals in it

yes the 0x490 looks like a generic stop and 0x50 is a memory foul up

So stopped due to memory foul up and I remember now the critical error on Alt F4 was a graphics driver stop, hence aero fail, I am guessing its something to do with untidy graphics memory locations on exit from that game (which was not KerbalSP btw but an different game.)

So I am fairly hopeful this is an example of data corruption causing the error. Just need to figure out where the corrupt graphics driver data is kept.

win32k.sys is most likely the cause..

All in one info about bsod 0x50
http://www.carrona.org/bsodindx.html#0x00000050

Quote:
Cause

Bug check 0x50 usually occurs after the installation of faulty hardware or in the event of failure of installed hardware (usually related to defective RAM, be it main memory, L2 RAM cache, or video RAM).

Another common cause is the installation of a faulty system service.

Antivirus software can also trigger this error, as can a corrupted NTFS volume.
Resolving the Problem

Resolving a faulty hardware problem: If hardware has been added to the system recently, remove it to see if the error recurs. If existing hardware has failed, remove or replace the faulty component. You should run hardware diagnostics supplied by the system manufacturer. For details on these procedures, see the owner's manual for your computer.

Resolving a faulty system service problem: Disable the service and confirm that this resolves the error. If so, contact the manufacturer of the system service about a possible update. If the error occurs during system startup, restart your computer, and press F8 at the character-mode menu that displays the operating system choices. At the resulting Windows Advanced Options menu, choose the Last Known Good Configuration option. This option is most effective when only one driver or service is added at a time.

Resolving an antivirus software problem: Disable the program and confirm that this resolves the error. If it does, contact the manufacturer of the program about a possible update.

Resolving a corrupted NTFS volume problem: Run Chkdsk /f /r to detect and repair disk errors. You must restart the system before the disk scan begins on a system partition. If the hard disk is SCSI, check for problems between the SCSI controller and the disk.

Finally, check the System Log in Event Viewer for additional error messages that might help pinpoint the device or driver that is causing the error. Disabling memory caching of the BIOS might also resolve it.
Comments

Typically, this address is in freed memory or is simply invalid.

This cannot be protected by a try - except handler it can only be protected by a probe.

As it is video RAM, so it really don't keep the data...

You may wanna get a graphic card for testing that, did the graphic card is broken or what.
---
And ya, it still can be system file corrupt, too bad you has windows 7, since Windows 8, it supported repair the file online, which will get the same file version from the MS server then replace it.

If you has pen drive(or something similar), try to check that if you can going into Win PE or not.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../hh825109.aspx

If Win PE boot fine, then it is most likely a system file corrupt, or hard disk issues.

Maybe be a broken kernel or something. The graphics card is fine with the clone drive, no sign of fault. Just bad error handling by the software.

Is there any way to restore a cloned kernel ?

OMG, found the fix, it was MS who broke the Kernel with an update.

The way to fix this is to delete \Windows\System32\FNTCACHE.DAT. The file will automatically be regenerated on the next boot.

(Information found on Microsoft Support Forum [microsoft.com] and used to successfully fix my own system.)

How do you delete the file if you can't boot?

(1) Press F8 during boot to get to the Windows boot manager advanced options screen.
(2) Select "Repair".
(3) Provide password for a local account that's a member of the Administrator group.
(4) Select "Command Prompt".
(5) Find drive letter assigned to Windows partition (may not be C: in the repair environment!).
(6) Delete \Windows\System32\FNTCACHE.DAT.
(7) Exit command prompt and reboot system.
(8) Fixed!

Good to hear about that, and thank for the sharing too.

And ya, if there are more minidump to pointing out it is about something for font, I might will starting thinking the font is the issues, just too bad it is not any more minidump created.
Also each time I reply, it is midnight here, so I really forgot the Windows Update just came out a few days ago... ;P
