Intel i7 920 to AMD FX-6300 or similar worth it?

I'm getting a new rig for myself (i7 4770k build with a Radeon 7990 6GB card) and re-purposing my current parts to build a gaming PC for a family member.

    Parts being carried over:
    Graphics: 2x HIS Radeon 6950 2GB
    CPU: i7 920 C0 (OC'd to 3.0 Ghz)
    Motherboard: EVGA X58 SLI LE
    RAM: 6GB DDR3 OCZ Gold 1600
Storage: 2x 60gb OCZ Vertex SSDs in Raid0

Is upgrading the old i7 920 C0 (can't hold a stable OC past 3.0 ghz) worth it to an AMD FX-6300 or some other CPU in the $120 USD range (and hence having to buy a new mobo as well)? What would be the approx. in-game difference between the two?

At only 3GHz that 920 will likely struggle in upcoming games. Of course it depends on the kind of games intended to be played. Going for a new CPU won't be a bad idea especially considering the crossfire setup. If you can get a cheap D0, that is also fine.

Multi gpu systems need a lot of cpu power, I would not run that amd cpu with 2 cards.
Edit: I would get a used better oc 1366 i7 and oc it to 4ghz or so like lucidus said.

If the i7 920 can handle it, the indications are that the 6300 can as well, and probably better.

No multi gpu is not a strong suit with amd cpu`s.

The 6300 is good for $120. But that doesn't mean it really measures up with the big dogs. Not to mention, the single thread performance is abysmal. 1366 i7's are better in that department by a lot.

Nope it all comes down to the PCIE lanes and in AMD's case the PCIE lanes are controlled by the chipset not the CPU directly. This causes a severe bottleneck in multi-card setups I'm not positive that x2 cards like 6990, 7990 or the R9 295x2 are effected but the general rule is two GPU's go Intel.

OP it may be worth just picking up say a 960 and overclock it.

I wouldn't get the 6300 if you plan to run CFX. Why not oc the 920 and see how that goes?

I think $120 is a rip off when NewEgg has the 8320 listed at $154...lol

They tend to run hot running stability programs with HT enabled

yeah, bad clocker. others need less voltage.

I was hoping for a few less volts but 4.5ghz was my goal so I'm not too upset. Now my motherboard is borked and I can't even get it back to stock clocks....lol
