I just picked up a r9 290x and since my current computer is 4 years old, i want to replace the CPU and Mobo to fully take advantage of the new card. Im looking to spend as little as possible and leaning towards a AMD fx 8350. I could get a fx 9370 for $10 more. These good bets, and is the 9370 worth the $10 more, or a 8320 for $50 less then 8350? I have no problem OCing. I have a hyper plus 212, will it work with the AM3+? And then Mobo recommedations, as low cost as possible..
Honestly not a lot of people around here use AMD CPU's, so... Yeah probably not much input on a good MOBO/CPU. Most the guys in here have Intel CPUs paired with AMD GPUs.
you already have an i5 at 4ghz, Haswell is going to be the best upgrade you can do. 4690 or 4790. tbh I do not know if the amd chips your looking at is a worthwhile upgrade.
if you get FX9370 (220W TDP) then you might have to get a new psu as well.. FX8320 has 125W Both 290x & FX 9xxx together will consume a lot of power. Imo Haswell - Devils Canyon i7 4790K will be that cpu to unleash full gpu potential. cpu 360$ http://www.ncix.com/detail/intel-core-i7-4790k-unlocked-d5-97888-1031.htm mobo 151$ after rebate http://www.ncix.com/detail/msi-z97-g45-gaming-atx-lga1150-48-97044-1360.htm or this Asus for 160$ http://www.ncix.com/detail/asus-z97-a-atx-lga1150-ddr3-4a-97021-1360.htm or 4core 4 thread variant 4690K combo deal for 380$ with bonus code http://www.ncix.com/detail/ncix-bundle-deal-asus-z97-a-c1-99038-1031.htm ^ You can still upgrade to i7 later, ie Broadwell K processors. vs Fx8320 combo deal for 360$ http://www.ncix.com/detail/ncix-bundle-deal-asus-m5a99fx-69-94631.htm
I have the Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 which is arguably the best Mobo for AMD FX series and the only way to go imho if you get an 8320/8350/9370... That is what I would recommend, but keeping those chips cool is a chore, I had to get a Corsair H100 to keep mine cool enough for a 24X7 4.6Ghz overclock. I initially had the coolermaster 212+ which is an awesome cooler, but had to keep down at 4.4Ghz and even then it ran a little hotter than I wanted. I game at 5760X1080 with a 7970Ghz Edition, and I am extremely happy with the performance, but I do admit an I7 with a good overclock is faster than my setup. I just prefer AMD. Many people will tell you those FX's are a waste of time, but it is completely untrue, if you don't mind the higher power draw, better cooling requirements (which you will need to OC intel anyway) than they can kick ass. Mine at 4.6Ghz is faster than most stock I5/I7s, granted they can overclock and kick my butt too, but not by huge margins that some would have you believe. Anyway if you want to go AMD, Sabretooth is the best choice PS, wanted to mention, the 8320-9370 all seem to have very similar OC abilities, so better to go with 8320 to save a few bucks and use that for the better MB. This Chart gives you some comparison's, if you OC your 8320 to 4.6-4.7 you would be the same level as the 9590... http://www.cpubenchmark.net/overclocked_cpus.html Notice the I5 760 scores about 5000, where an FX @ 4.7 scores 11,000
The best router would be a Haswell build. The increased core efficiency of Haswell will be of bigger benefit than the additional physical cores that the FX processors have. Passmark is multi-threaded..... Having 8-cores already gives it a healthy increase over an i5 760.
Op has his 760 at 4ghz from 2.8ghz stock clock. Hence why I dont think an 8320 is a good idea in this situation.
There's nothing wrong with AMD CPU's. They're just aimed at applications that are heavily threaded and suffer in lightly threaded applications as a result. For the scenarios that they were designed for, they perform quite well. Gaming just isn't among those scenarios. Hell, I'm using an Athlon 5350 and quite honestly couldn't see choosing Intel for such a low-budget system. I still have my 2600K, but it's serving duty as a dedicated folding system now (which is another task I wouldn't choose AMD for)....
Thankyou, for your non-biased opinion Sykosiz, many AMD haters out there, but everyone with an 8000-9000 series FX knows full well they game just fine I play all the latest titles, BF4, Titanfall, Divinity, Crysis Series, TF2, WatchDogs, Witcher 2, etc, etc, etc. (actually there is not a game that exists that an FX can't play well with a decent video card of course.) And at 5760X1080 no less, most titles are comfortably over 60 Fps, only the harshest titles run slower and even then intel users have the same trouble, Watchdogs and AC4 for example. Not everyone wants to pay over $300.00 or more for a quad intel, when they can get an 8 core AMD that is 80% of the speed for half the price PS, I know you are not an AMD hater, but I would pit my 8350 vs your 2600K across 10 games/apps, I bet you take 5, I take 5... and all the newer Intel's have only marginally increased in performance, that's why so many people still use their 2500/2600
^^Where did I say your cpu can`t game fine? I mentioned its a bad choice for someone already with an i5 @4ghz already. That`s what this thread is about, helping the op with his decision. Not to defend your purchase here.
Nobody said that the FX processors can't game fine. I'm pretty sure that if paired with the right graphics card, my Athlon 5350 could probably game just fine.....and it's only $65.....
i5 SB/IB def not worth going to FX, but maybe from i5 760 it may be. Have to check benchmark scores. Any 8 core should be OK they all OC to about 4.6-5.0Ghz so whatever is within your budget. If you play old games def stick with Intel, new releases then AMD should be safe if it can use ~6 cores. Sabertooth R2 is fantastic, or ROG if you have deep pockets. A 212 Plus won't be enough cooling tho. 212 Evo at least - better still a Noctua. Please piss off.
Just checked AnandTech, i5 760 and 8350 are equal at stock. If u can OC ur i5 I would not upgrade, as others said.
^Ignore that I had 2x 760's by mistake. 8350 is actually much faster in multithreading, but you could prob OC i5 for similar performance maybe?
Well considering i5 have higher single thread performance and he will be gaming on it i don't think any FX chip would be upgrade. If he really clocked 4GHz only haswell would make sense.
