Got a fx5200 here that worked fine in a customers PC but was getting very hot so offered to swap it for a ATI 9200 that I had, that has a fan. So swapped it over. Now im back home, I put the FX5200 in a old pc im using for old games and all is fine untill the drivers are installed. After reboot im stuck in 4bit colour and 640*480. If i boot up in VGA Mode its the same res but colour is fine but the display settings show only 4bit colour option. I decided to bake the card but its made no difference. Has the card just decided to die from being moved?
If installing any sort of VGA drivers causes the issue where standard VGA drivers does not, then it's likely a driver related issue. Have you tried installing other driver versions? Possibly archived custom drivers?
I have tried 2 drivers from 2008 and 1 from 2005 so far, all do the same. Im going to find the 1st driver that supported the FX5200 and try that But after googleing about, Is it possible there is a compatability issue with the motherboard? It is an old one. http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=1364#ov
It could be a motherboard related issue, but I'm not aware of any general incompatibilities between AGP boards with AGP cards. If memory serves, the only thing related to AGP video cards that you could tinker with was the AGP aperture size, but that was more of a performance related setting than a compatibility related setting. Fortunately, there's a good archive of custom/modded drivers in the Guru3d download page. Considering their release dates, all of the drivers should support a FX 5200. http://www.guru3d.com/files-categories/videocards-nvidia-forceware-(modified).html
Could well be fooked, happened to me a few times. 9800 Pro and FX 5700U to name a couple. FX were junk anyway so prob best put out of it's misery. lol Any squares in bios or weird looking ascii characters during boot? *Oh yeah, try switching to 4x AGP in bios.....that rings a bell for some reason..
Mobo only supports x2 and there is no option to change it Display is fine in the bios and while loading windows.. its only once the driver is loaded that it all goes wonky
Oh man now I'm starting to have flashbacks of the old days. hmm.. .. yeah the good 'ol days..., ABIT is king, we worship nF2 MCP-T (DDL ftw) and Athlon XP uses something called an Intel P3 to mop up BF1942 servers. Yep, this is the life...... Oh - I'm sorry what were you saying?
What did u have in that board before the 5200? **I think it's a driver related, which set did u try to install?
I had an ATI 9200 in there. Im gonna try a Voodoo5500 I have and see if that works.. I also have another mobo here with a 500Mhz celery in it. Ill try the fx in that and see if it has the same issues.
Yeah, sometimes flashbacks are fun..... I had this exact issue with a Radeon 9600XT "back in the day".... Turned out to be a faulty GPU. The card worked fine with the "standard vga" driver. Once the Catalyst drivers were installed, it went to 4bit mode. My FX5600XT did the same thing as well. That also turned out to be a faulty GPU....
