Try to find out whether the 920 is a c0 or d0 revision.
If its a d0 they normally do around 4-4.2ghz with a decent aftermarket cooler.
If its a c0 probably around 3.6ghz with decent after market cooler.
X58 is a good gaming platform if your still on it now but if i was upgrading i would try and go for the 2500k tbh as it will oc much better.

Seller also has a 950 for the same price, just waiting to hear back from as to what rev. Dunno much about the board but I'm not a fan of Gigabyte.

Last week I missed a great deal; 8320/Sabertooth Rev1/Noctua rig for $350. Didn't hit buy now cause wasn't sure AMD would be any good for iracing which only uses 2 cores.
Anything is better than a P4 though lol

2500k would be great but I think if bidding goes over $150 will be too expensive since it leaves only $250 for RAM+mobo+cooler.

He'll prob need a PSU as well to replace his current POS "Great Wall" as I think it's causing the freezing he gets while gaming.

i7 920/X58 OC'ed to something around 4.0 is still a great performer for games so if your friend is low on budget that is still a very nice solution for gaming.

Like Veteran just said if that 920 is D0 then it will be no problem to OC that CPU to 4GHz or more paired with GigaByte GA-EX58-UD4P and Coolmaster V6. GigaByte GA-EX58-UD4P is great OC'er, better than GigaByte GA-EX58-DS4 in my specs. If that 920 is C0 it's just a matter of luck if you can OC it above 3.8, 4.0. Mine "golden" 920 C0 goes above 4.2 with HT ON and VCore I think 1.375V but CPU temps now in summer are a bit higher for my taste (maxing above 65 Celsius with HT ON in high demanding games) with (mounted outside the case) Corsair H70 Core push-pull on that CPU so I keep it around 4GHz and so now, until winter comes.

If seller is having i7 950 for the same price then go for it, all 950 are D0 so it won't be a problem to OC it to 4.0 or 100, 200MHz more with Coolmaster V6.

Make sure to flash latest BIOS for that mobo before OC session, F14P if that mobo is rev.1.0 (I can't see rev number on pic/link you've provided)

Here is a little help for OC i7 920, OC'ing 950 is almost the same, just a different multiplier:
    http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/rmp_i7_920_overclocking
    http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/upload/files/Core.i7.920.oc.4G.2008.12.12_ENG.pdf

GigaByte GA-EX58-UD4P is very similar to my GigaByte GA-EX58-DS4 when it comes to BIOS and OC, more than 95% options in their BIOS'es are same. If you need any more help about OC that 920 or 950 just ask.

If you're going for the 920, make sure it's the D0 revision.

Get a rampage 2 extreme if you can. Its the best x58 board you can get for oc.

How do these 2 boards stack up? Any reason I shouldn't make a stupidly low offer on the GA UD4 linked in my 1st post? I can get it this avo...

    EVGA X58 Classified

XFX X58i- appears this one suffers the X58 memory bug...

I don't see a real reason why not to get GigaByte GA-EX58-UD4P if you can get all things (mobo + CPU + RAM + Coolmaster V6) cheaper cheaper than EVGA or XFX combinations mentioned above. As I stated before GigaByte GA-EX58-UD4P is an excellent for OC and you can't go wrong with it if you stumble on nice CPU capable for high OC. In GigaByte combination from first post it's not about how high mobo can do an OC but how much that 920 D0 is capable for OC: 4.0, 4.2, 4.5 ... GA-EX58-UD4P can easily handle OC like that.

I just want to know which is the better board. I already bought a CPU, not really worried about that.

Think I'll grab the GA as I can pick it up 2morrow.

If you take that GA mobo and when you decide to start OC leave message here (+ what RAM's are you using: speed; CL timings; voltage) so that I could give you some advices for OC and copy > paste options (or it will be easier for both to do BIOS screenshots) from BIOS of my GigaByte GA-EX58-DS4 + i7 920 C0 on.... let's say current 4.01GHz, but that 920 D0 you bought will run/OC on lower voltage for sure. Like I've just said before GigaByte GA-EX58-UD4P and my GigaByte GA-EX58-DS4 share more than 95% BIOS options.

For OC start you can use GigaByte's OC guide for i7 920 to 4GHz PDF file in my first post, very usefull guide, but be aware that they've done it with 920 C0, 920 D0 will require less voltage for same 4GHz OC.

Thanks but I'm very familiar with Award & MIT, just usually on AMD or nForce chips not Intel (although I do have B75).

And I'm not def not installing Easy Tune (as per the PDF)... But I'll have a read, as there will be some useful info. :)[IMG]

Yep, forget about GigaByte's Easy Tune, I've never used it... OC via BIOS, HWInfo64, CPU-Z and lot of testing with Prime95 is all you need.
