    Hey guys,

    I recently started getting some issues while trying to record with the x264vfw codec with MSI Afterburner. In the past it worked flawlessly, but I formatted and then suddenly it just stopped working.

    I am using the latest MSI Afterburner beta 19 (have tried with 18 aswell)
    Got a Win7 64 bit install and using the x264vfw 64 bit version.

    So basically its both clean installs of the programs aside for MSI afterburner where I configured my On-Screen display, screen capture and video capture settings.

    When I record with the standard MJPG codec, it works fine. But when I record with the x264vfw codec it doesn't. On the On-screen display only the timer and file size figure changes, but the rest do not. Then when I open the file/video/recording, I only get a black screen and a high pitch screech.

    Any idea how to fix this?

    **tl;dr - I get a black screen and screech when recording with the x264vfw codec.

    Did you change any settings in x264vfw? Reset it to defaults.

    Which Container format are you using? Works for me with MKV.

    Correct. 32-bit codec is required if you're recording video from 32-bit applications (without using encoder server in 64-bit mode).

    No, I didn't change any of the settings in x264vfw.
    I haven't tried the MKV format, will do that sometime.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

    I have tried a 32bit version of it in the past and didn't work either, that was a while ago though. Then I googled it and found someone that said they tried a 64bit and it worked for them, so I tried it.

    But will try the 32bit version again, thanks.

    The thing is, there are multiple scenarios where you need either 32-bit or 64-bit codec:

    Without the dedicated encoder server:
    - the need of 32/64-bit codec depends on the game binary you're capturing
    - 32-bit game binary => need 32-bit codec
    - 64-bit game binary => need 64-bit codec

    With the dedicated encoder server:
    - the need of codec depends on the dedicated encoder server
    - 32-bit dedicated encoder server => need 32-bit codec
    - 64-bit dedicated encoder server => need 64-bit codec

    Dedicated encoder server can be enabled in Settings > Video capture tab, under video capture compatibility properties.

    32-/64-bitness of the dedicated encoder server can be set in Settings > On-Screen Display tab > More > Wrench icon top right > General tab, under Compatibility properties.

    So better have both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the codec installed.

    Another thing mentioned earlier is that you can only change the 32-bit codec's the settings thru the codec selection within Afterburner (because Afterburner is a 32-bit application). If you (for the above reasons) wind up using 64-bit, you need to change its settings thru the codec's own setting tool.
