Default Best Visually Animated Cartoons? - 03-04-2014, 14:01 | posts: 7,057 | Location: Dubai, UAE / London, UK

My wife seems to be into animated cartoons such as Ice Age, Finding Nemo, etc...

What would YOU gurus recommend I get on Blu Ray? Which cartoons in the last 2-3 years have the best visuals?

Thanks.

Steamboy
Spirited Away

Aw crap. I just noticed the "last 2-3 years part". They're still great animated movies though!

As she seems to like 3D animation I'd say check out Despicable Me and it's sequel.

^ Thanks dark_surge. Would you recommend Frozen from 2013?

The ones you recommended are Japanese? What else are superior with regards with quality? Extreme HD.

Nope they are superior in regards to story. They are traditional 2D cel animation.

For visual quality, I would recommend "Rango".
I found it very impressive:

The story, even if very classical, is not bad also.

I don't usually like these sort of things but I though Brave was quite good.

Brave, Frozen, and the Despicable Me movies as already mentioned. I watched all of these because I have kids but I'd watch the Despicable Me movies even if I didn't.

It's not 3d, but the princess and the frog had some pretty quality animation.

Brave is really beautiful and my favourite from the past few years visually. Monsters University looks pretty amazing too... I think they both look at their best in 3D.. though I know its not everyone's cup of tea.

Rango is also brilliant... Roger Deakins may have something to do with that ;-) Its also a film that can be enjoyed on an adult level.

Thanks all for your replies. Hope I'll have some spare time to watch these with the misses.

Work takes too much of my time!

The wife could always watch them first. She just about knows how to operate the Playstation 3 for watching blu ray movies.

Ok to fill some gaps:

9 (yes that is the name and it is stunning and a bit depressing)
Puss in Boots
Wreck it Ralph
Free Bird
Open Season (there are 3 parts I think)

Some of them are a bit older, but still very good and of course most of what is mentioned above is really good too.

I know it's been mentioned, but Frozen is pretty amazing. It's like a musical, with many great songs and good graphics and character design. The story is nice, too, not overly dramatic or serious, perfect for watching with family. Definitely recommended.
