There is no difference between R9 280x and 7970.

Reread article. There is difference and optimizations.

I can't complain about 280x, its very nice card for its price as 7970. Now we can pick cheaper 7970 or slightly faster 280x for affordable price.

    Looking forward for 290x!

    Thanks for review!

has a better fan (lower dba whilst lower temperature) , very nice at this price!

i read on another review on tweakers that the driver is whining if there is no CFX bridge connected. they were also getting poor performance in eyefinity. So it needs a driver update!

Apparantly also PCIE-3 is also needed for this bridgeless technology due to the bandwidth. (but previous cards with pcie-3 support are also supported it seems)

Nice review, though a bit lame that all of them are refreshes of the last generation. From what I've seen in those charts I suspect the 290X to be between a Titan and a 780 in performance, what I really care about is the price though. All the cards in this review have good prices, I wonder if they can keep that up with 290/290X.

"Especially with standards like PCI-E Gen 3.0 there's plenty of bandwidth there, but even at Gen 2.0, it really isn't an issue"

3.0 is in fact not required. Also what I gather from that is whether you are using PCI 2.0 or 3.0, the performance difference will be very minimal with a 2x xfire setup.

Might be reading into things a bit much... but I haven't seen any info to disprove this...

the guys from tweakers spoke with Frank Hering, director of engineering and he said that bridgeless cfx is supported on pcie3.

so i dont know if its a technology bottleneck or amd is restricting it in their drivers.

Yep... was really just saying that I haven't seen any info saying that there will be any sort of significant difference using 2.0 and 2x crossfire vs 3.0 and 2x crossfire.

There's an Idea for an article/review Hilbert. :D

Based on UK Pricing at this stage, I would get a 7970 GHZ instead of a 280X. Since they are more or less the same, the 7970 GHZ will go down in price as it gets phased out (both cards are around £240~). Also, some sources are saying that you do not get the Never Settle bundle with the new 200 cards (besides BF4 in the 290X). This may change though as time goes on.

I believe DLG wanted to say that for a refresh it's a bit pathetic. Now the new tech around it seems fine , but only in case if it's not gonna bring more driver issues. My quicker GTX660Ti matches the R280 in 3D mark11 as well so the extra horsepower we got with this refresh is ****** Let's just hope that it's gonna drive the prices down and that the R290 is going to be cheap too. It's insane to pay more than 500E for a top GPU. That needs to stop. Now let's just hope that R290 is gonna be much quicker than TITAN. Otherwise nvidia is only going to release the slower chip with Maxwell update and they will be waiting on AMD to release the top GPU from Maxwell range which could take a year just like they did it with TITAN..

I've seen non reference 280X's for as little as £230. That said I've also seen 7970's with bundles for slightly less, which would be my choice also.

As always $ to £ is retarded as ever so at the moment as pointed out a 7970 is a much better price here in the uk

I give them that they are priced at a very good level R-280X for $299 is very cheap while the GTX 770 (which been out for 3-4 months) is $399 to $429. Should prompt nVidia to lower its prices. Performance wise its disappointing and comparable to a 1 year old 7970.

The R-290X will be interesting to look at though once its out.. but Maxwell is few months away. AMD might be too late to the game.
