My own fault. Now I fully understand the term NSFW.

Got too comfy in my workplace and dived into the depths of Reddit. Erghh.

Not looking for sympathy, just here as a reminder to anyone with access to NSFW. Keep your head on your shoulders and stay focused on your work. I know most of you will have the common sense to do that, but I guess we all slip at some point.

Hopefully it won't take me long to find work again cause I've got a barrage of bills heading my way in the next fortnight.

Thought that one of the jobs of the IT lot is to make sure staff don't surf the internet, and that they had the network stitched up so damned tight that only legitimate sites could be reached.
Certainly hope that you find a new job soon, other than working for Ronald McDonald.

Reddit?

So you was caught looking at nude photos or something and you got fired that quick, not even a warning? Sounds like they didn't want you there from the start and found an excuse to get rid of you.

Years ago I did online security for some major banks, every once in awhile I would be asked to inspect all in house computers even though we had network specialists there. There was one guy who always bothered the women who worked there, showing them little respect and just damn ignorant towards them, married fellow also.

We had a NSFW policy but it was not something I enforced I was just looking for security breaches and stuff, I found tons of gay porn pics and links to websites he thought he had hidden well, I let a couple of the women know and from that day onward his harassment of them stopped, it never went to the higher ups and I told the women I did not ever want it to.

The guy learnt NSFW that day but at least it did not cost him his job.

Sorry the asses at your job could not show some compassion.

You sure they can just fire you for surfing the net, that doesn't seem right.....What line of work are you in?

policy at our place makes NSFW content gross misconduct, which may lead to termination of contract. All employees are required to read and accept the corporate electronic communication and use of IT equipment policies yearly, or sooner if they're substantively changed.

Termination for a first offence seems harsh, but I guess it's dependent on the local contractual stuff that you would have signed up to, and what the material was.

On the contrary - I liked the managers, and got the impression since I started there that the feeling was mutual.

Just to clarify, two others as well as myself got fired for it, but I was the one on the computer and they were peering over my shoulder. I should have stopped at the first link, but curiosity got the better of me. It was all ****s and giggles to be honest and we didn't think anything more of it. Obviously it wasn't as funny for management - Or maybe it was, seeing as one of the managers laughed about the material. Hmm.

However, we do believe we were punished a bit too harshly and we think it's because our supervisor was leaving on bad terms with upper management. Our supervisor told us they will want to lay him off so he doesn't receive any accrued bonuses - which was quite a bit of coin apparently.

The effect of firing three of us would mean him probably losing his job also.

We could have got off with a slap on the wrist otherwise. Maybe.

I'm sorry, too. I was really expecting a warning when he first started explaining the situation, but then he said "some of you won't be working here at the end of this conversation" - It was really gut wrenching.

First time, yeah. Prior to what happened, I've never been fired or warned for anything in a workplace.

I work(ed) in customer support for an online department store.

Thanks for all the kind words, guys.

I was with a job agency while working for the place I got fired from. The agency have been really great about the situation. She just said "you got caught, there's nothing we can do really. Boys will be boys" - She's trying to find me another job as soon as possible.

Job agency? That explains it. You are disposable when you work for any agency, sadly that's the way it is nowadays as there are 100 more people waiting in line. One agency I worked for even had the cheek to send me emails telling me how many millions they'd made while at the same time paying me just over minimum wage...

I don't think I'd like to make a case considering what "evidence" they'll have to show for what they based their decision on.

That is the sad truth, I guess. All three of us were agency and easily replaceable, that's what made this whole situation a lot easier for them.

Are companies supposed to tell people what they can do and can't do when working on computers? Are companies supposed to block websites that are not NSFW?

Damn they should have let you go with a warning, not firing you. Some people when they get some power get to act like asses and pretend their employees to work and act like robots. No sweat, no mistakes. It's not fair and speaks quite badly about their qualities as human beings. It was just Reddit, not Rotten (NSFW, you have been warned).
