Oh...

Quote:
The Walt Disney Company (DIS) and Electronic Arts Inc. (EA) today announced a new multi-year exclusive licensing agreement to develop and publish globally new games based on Star Wars characters and storylines.

Under the agreement, EA will develop and publish new Star Wars titles for a core gaming audience, spanning all interactive platforms and the most popular game genres, while Disney will retain certain rights to develop new titles within the mobile, social, tablet and online game categories.

“This agreement demonstrates our commitment to creating quality game experiences that drive the popularity of the Star Wars franchise for years to come,” said John Pleasants, Co-President of Disney Interactive. “Collaborating with one of the world’s premier game developers will allow us to bring an amazing portfolio of new Star Wars titles to our fans around the world.”

“Every developer dreams of creating games for the Star Wars universe,” said EA Labels President Frank Gibeau. “Three of our top studios will fulfill that dream, crafting epic adventures for Star Wars fans. DICE and Visceral will produce new games, joining the BioWare team which continues to develop for the Star Wars franchise. The new experiences we create may borrow from films, but the games will be entirely original with all new stories and gameplay.”

Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Top EA studios Visceral, DICE and BioWare will work with Lucasfilm on the creation of new console, PC, mobile, and tablet games.

Compared with the star wars games of late? Hard to do worse, and they're not exactly studios renowned at making bad games.

I'm happy, very happy - 3 games developers I really like with an IP I love.

Give me Dice with Battlefront or Battlefield Star Wars, Visceral with a nice atmospheric Star Wars action game and BioWare with a Mass Effect style Star Wars RPG and i'll be a happy.

I'm not interested in Battlefront. I used to be a massive fan of Bioware, then they fell in with EA and everything eventually went down hill. DA2 / ME3 / TOR. I don't care who sings the praises of those games, as far as I'm concerned they're awful. ME3 for a lot more than just the 'endings' -- Bioware is dead.

lol.
Poor old Star Wars, Disney bought the rights to the films so they could milk it for all its worth and now EA will do the same with the games.

I'm depressed now. Look, lets play our new star wars game...wait server is busy? I'll try back later...oh sweet I'm in...**** I got kicked and lost all my progress...well lets try again. Oh, I need to buy a DLC in order to play something that was already on game day launch...ok well that's nice. I'm gonna do download that on Steam...wait I can't...hum, ok. I'm just gonna go join some MP, oh the next game is already out and no one is playing it, well that's cool, I guess I will go buy it, $60, damn...alright here it goes...**** can't play with anyone as I need a map pack premium expansion...fine. Oh sweet look at that awesome lightsaber, $10 really? Oh, hey look at this, PirateBay has it without all this BS, still can't play it on Steam, but FU EA.

Well sht...

Now EA will try to "going back to the roots" of Battlefront by making it a micro transaction / DLC filled buggy mess (same excuse they used for C&C, "going back to the roots" they say, because Red Alert 1 was all about DLC and multiplayer only right?)

I think I'm amongst the few happy about this news lol.

SW Battlefront made by DICE with frostbyte engine, SW vehicles, **** could be freaking EPIC. I even have faith left in Bioware that they could pull off good SW themed RPGs again if they wanted to (and would of course be let to do so by EA...). Besides, it has been a long time since the last good SW game came out, as somebody said before, it is hard to do worse.

They've got most of the original CoD studio iirc...it's been a bit quiet around those guys or I've just ignored any related news the past few years.

And while DICE + Battlefround sounds interesting, if they don't make a transition between space and ground battles possible - like the PSP offspin and how they tried with Battlefront 3 - I'm not hyped.

Same here. I'm pleased with developer house choice. However, the marketing strategy of EA leaves a lot to be desired.

My prediction is solid games that will be plagued by faulty services (DRMs) and DLCs (not ones that necessarily screw the game over, but ones that will certainly destroy the PR as usual).

I'd hate to see Battlefront 3 go the way of BF3, being chopped up into little pieces to be sold as DLC, while still making us pay full price for an unfinished base game.
