Default Sony PS4 thread - 02-01-2013, 12:43 | posts: 23,563 | Location: Netherlands

Quote:

Sony Corp. is planning to unveil its next-generation home videogame console during a February event, showing off a successor to its current PlayStation 3 system.

The Japanese electronics giant Thursday unveiled plans for a special PlayStation-themed event set for Feb. 20, teasing fans to "see the future" at the event. People familiar with the matter have said the new device will make its debut there, beating Microsoft Corp. MSFT -1.46% to the punch in announcing its own next-generation game machine.

Sony is set to unveil its long-awaited successor to the Playstation 3 on Feb. 20. The WSJ's Daisuke Wakabayashi has the details on the new videogame console.

Sony's device will be released later this year, these people said, and will spar against Microsoft's own machine, which is also expected to be released by the holidays.

Sony's updated console's arrival comes as the console videogame industry has entered a tailspin. Sales of new videogames, consoles and accessories at U.S. retail shops fell 22% in December when compared with the same time a year prior, according to surveys by industry watcher NPD Group.

In another sign of the difficult environment for traditional videogame machines, Nintendo Co. 7974.OK -0.56% slashed sales forecasts for its new home console, the Wii U, earlier this week. After launching its first new home console in six years in November, Nintendo said Wii U sales disappointed during the holiday shopping season. The company is now forecasting plans to sell 4 million units versus an earlier estimate for 5.5 million units.

The PS3 made its debut in 2006.

The videogame industry is undergoing a sea change. While videogames used to be limited to dedicated game machines and personal computers, the proliferation of smartphones and other Internet connected devices is opening the floodgates to free or inexpensive games.

Such shifts in consumer behavior and the aging consoles—the Xbox 360 debuted in 2005 and the PS3 a year later—are weighing on game sales, which have contracted every month since December of 2011. Further, Electronic Arts Inc. EA +4.31% said the console industry's packaged goods sales fell by about a fifth last year.

In a nod to the changes afoot in the industry, Sony is planning to incorporate more social gaming aspects into the new machine, people familiar with the matter said. Also, while hardware improvements were a key focus of past console upgrades, Sony is more focused this time on the changes in how users interact with the machine, these people said.

When developing the PlayStation, Sony had considered removing its optical disk drive, opting instead to require gamers to download titles over the Internet, people familiar with the matter said. But concerns over the size of videogame files, and slow Web connections in some countries led Sony to scrap the plan, they added. Microsoft made a similar decision for its console as well.

Complicating the design of the new device will be the likely inclusion of chips designed by Advanced Micro Devices Inc., AMD -1.89% which people familiar with the matter said have been used in prototypes. The chip is separate from the technology Sony currently relies upon for its PlayStation 3, known as the Cell chip, which was developed jointly with International Business Machines Corp. IBM -0.22% and Toshiba Corp. 6502.TO -2.71% The move would both introduce compatibility concerns with existing games, built to run on the Cell chip, while also ending a long-running partnership with Nvidia Corp., NVDA -0.49% which supplies graphics chips for the current PlayStation.

In Sony's efforts to beef up its videogame offerings, it purchased Gaikai Inc. for $380 million last year. The company lets gamers play visually sophisticated games through a Web browser, without the need for specialized hardware or graphics circuits. Gaikai's technology runs games in a data center and then streams the images over the Internet.

The PlayStation 3 was a technological marvel when it was released in November 2006. While it has sold more than 70 million units since its debut, the PS3 didn't dominate the industry in the way that its predecessors did. Initially, the machines gave consumers sticker shock, launching two models at $500 and $600. Even at that price, the console was selling at a loss, forcing the company to incur massive losses.

Over time, Sony brought down the PS3's price and improved the machine's profit margins, but it still trails Nintendo's Wii and Microsoft's Xbox 360 in overall units shipped.

Don't have to buy them all Bigtime. Only a Playstation 4 will do fine. Skip Xbox. It's lame anyway

Hopefully we do get something good, some footage would be nice and a list of launch titles.
Doubt we will get much in the way of specs until MS have announced the Xbox details, but this will be better than nothing.

Still need to make up my mind which system i will get, i preferred the PS3 exclusives, but the pad is crap and needs to be changed so hopefully they have something that has evolved from the PS1, it also needs better support from third party games as nearly everyone of them was better on the 360.
The similar hardware this time should make that less of an issue, but we don't know that for sure.

Might just get both again though, i have zero loyalty to either company so no point just getting one.

Sorry Sony its not that, its only because people see rubbish GFX and nothing new, not that it needs better social "integration" and this will somehow boost its sales .

It's a bit of both, some people are bored of everything looking the same, but better graphics isn't going to help sell games to people who don't think graphics are important.

The main reason game sales are down is is just that people have less money now than they did 3-4 years ago, gaming is a luxury, shiny graphics or a better online side of things is going to convince people to skip a mortgage payment.

if sony wants to come out of the gates strong, they need to be first, and make uncharted 4 a launch title.

This is going to get intresting....Sony better haver something good up their sleeve.....and it will be intresting to see if Sony will continue to run the PSN for free........if they bring much needed features like cross game voice chat then i dont see how they could continue tohave the PSN free.

Unless they do the smart thing and add cross game chat on the PS4 into the PS+ deal........now thats would be a very smart move.

People can still play online for free, but go PS+ and get games and cross chat......if Sony brought that to the PS4 i would not even look at the next xbox it would be Sony all the way.

Will not buy PS4 this time around. My PS3 sits and collects dust unless I want to watch a blu-ray. Even then, every time I turn it on it wants to download a system update that takes 10-15 minutes to install. Ridiculous

They'll probably just show a quick little trailer that has a tv bezel taking up most if the screen (watch offical vita game trailers and youll know what i mean).

Though i still cant wait and would be nice for Playstation to get its crown back.

Need new SEGA console, they've had some awesome releases lately so hopefully they're saving their pennies for a comeback.

Besides, has Sony even confirmed that this is for the PS4 or is everyone just assuming that's what the announcement will be? For all we know they could be saying that they are dumping the Playstation brand because its a money pit.

Anyway back onto the topic of the thread.........

I hope with the ps4 Sony allow us to move all our arcade games and profiles over onto the new system............that would cerianly be a nice reward for all us long time ps3 users who have amassed a bucket load of psn digital games......and now doubt it would help push more ps4 sales if people knew their ps3 library went with them and fully were working on the ps4.

True, it's stuff like that which is the deciding factor when it comes to those who are on the fence about what system to get.
Even on phones it's stuff like that which helps a decision, why switch to a new phone OS when you already have a load of paid for software that you will lose.

Backwards compatibly sounds like it could be an issue though, if true then the hardware is quite different this time round which could create a world of problems.
