Just trying my first overclock on the 3570k.
Got 4.2ghz and 1.28 volts. Temperature using stock cooler is about 73C max. Does all that sound ok?
Asus P8Z77-V LX board and i5 3570k.

you don't really want to be in the 70s, get a better cooler, but sure that sounds fine.

Yes, it's buggy, like around half the games out there, Batman AC thrashes the cpu too, and although Hitman isn't a thrasher it's another that likes a highly clocked cpu.

I can hit 4.2 with only 1.1v. You should really try to under volt as it will help with temps too

I would buy a cheap aftermarket cooler - 30 euro and you have a good one
If you are going to overclock, you should always try to get the highest overclock on the lowest voltage, so your temps dont get to high.
Try lowering the voltage.

I used the built in Asus motherboard "extreme/performance" overclocking setting in the bios. PC rebooted a few times then booted up with Asus's perfomance settings.
Coming from an AMD Phenom 940 2 weeks ago, the only thing I changed to overclock that was the multiplier. This time, from what I've read it seems a bit more complicated so that's the reason I tried the bios auto overclock.
Yep, temps and voltage could be lower but if anyone can point me in the direction of an idiots guide to overclocking the 3570k I'd appreciate it. A mild overclock of 4.2 would do me fine.

lower your cpu volts and test with prime 95 blend max memory 64 bit avx instruction set. have a feeling the auto oc gives you more cpu volts than you need

If all you want is 4.2Ghz why not just set turbo mode to run at 4.2Ghz? I believe most 3570Ks can do 4.2Ghz with around stock voltage can they not?

Gigabyte has by means of beta bios updates let us know that ivy is capable to do 4.4ghz on auto voltage. In their betas the multi was max 4.4 with no means of controlling volts. (this was z68) and it would do 4.4 no probs on auto.

my 3570K can't do 4.4 on auto volts, the I post, then BSOD the moment I try to do anything. My 4.4Ghz requires 1.265V with LLC at max, or it will crash (I envy those that got golden chips that do 1.1V at my clock speed). My temps usuallly sit in the mid 60's while gaming, but benchmarks will push them into the mid 70's like the OP. I'm at 8 Months now on these settings, no troubles yet.
