Default Overclocking Asus 7950 - 01-14-2013, 18:07 | posts: 1,449 | Location: UK

Having problems getting my overclock stable. When setting to 1000/1525 and +20 power. Loading up GW2, the game locks up after loading, screen will go blank and then back to normal. EXE showing as not responding on task manager.

Haven't mess with any of the voltages yet, as my understanding is you don't need to unless the core is clock over 1100.

Anything I'm doing wrong?

You do actually need to increase it by a small bit.

Get MSI Afterburner and look up what the current default gpu volt is @ load, I'll help you out with this.

For example for my card to run 1100 it would need to have about 1.162v or 1.174v which is very okay.

for 1000 it would need 1.125v which is about a +30mV increase from the default voltage 1.093v.

Otherwise, up to 1.25v 24/7 for gaming is perfectly fine. Just as long as temps are good and stay under 71C something. But I'm not running that since I don't need the fps right now, I got enough now as it is @ 1100/1500 1.174v.

My 1100/1575 is at 1056mv. Try upping to 1033 or something and see how it goes.

Check your VRM temps. If you have a DCUII, your card might have some cooler mounting issues. First, though, set the clocks back to stock and run OCCT, Furmark, Kombustor, etc... while watching the vrm temps VERY closely, as if they remain too high youm might risk damage, although it's a remote risk for a few minutes worth of stress testing.

Just up the voltage to 1050 or 1100 and do the oc again and see how it goes. I don't think it has anything to do with VRMs, but to be on the safe side, you can get Kombustor and run it for 5 mins or play some heavy gfx game and check what the VRM temps are in GPU-z.. VRM temps are supposed to be high, so it's ok. Up to 100C or something should be perfectly safe If I'm not mistaken, I mean VRMs are built to withstand the heat and voltage that goes through them.

The stock voltage @ load on this bios (and card) is 1093 / 1.093v. So you can just set the voltage to 1100 to start with and carry on from there, do 1000 on core, then 1025->1050, if it hangs/locks/artifacts whatever increase the voltage by 20mV, so to 1120v or 1.12v then increase the core by 20mhz again.

Also increase the power limit in Afterburner to +20%.

Set voltage at 1031. Stable at 1000/1575. Thanks for the help.

12290 score for Catzilla AllBenchmark.

See.. easy as that. Good job. You could even go for 1100/1575 clocks as that is a pretty standard OC nowadays. Raise the voltage to like 1.100v or you might even need less than that, maybe 1.08v or 1.09v or something. And then run 3dmark11.

Tried at 1056mv with 1100 on the core, Benchmark crashes, so i would need to raise to 1.100. Might leave it as it is for now, as the card is only a week old.

Hehe, you don't need to worry about that. Nothing will happen to the card. As long as you don't keep it at 1.3v 24/7.

Up to 1.2v 24/7 for gaming is fine and is pretty standard nowadays.

The biggest limiting factor for me isn't Heat, or Voltage. Its the Fan Speed. Above 55% the TF3 really kicks in and goes pretty loud. I imagine I can get to around 1200 core if I tried but the fan would drive me insane.
