I am filling forms for college. It is asking me to chose the course for which i want to apply. Among other courses there are different flavors of the Computer Science branch. I want to ask which one of these sectors has the most opportunities in the upcoming future(5-10 years)? I am thinking cloud computing and virtualisation. I remember reading in an article somewhere that it is the future.
Your opinions? Reply quickly please, i need to fill these forms out ASAP. :)

Tell that to my parents. :wanker:

Um but isn't open source software free? And the open source software related corporations all run by voluntary contributions and donations isn't it? So, are there even jobs in that field? I really don't know much about this. :stewpid:

Thanks for the suggestion CronoGraal, i'm more into coding/programming myself, so i was leaning towards either cloud or IT infrastructure. IMHO, if i opt for Oil and Gas informatics like stuff i wont get a job where coding is involved, most probably operating big computers and stuff.

I always wanted a career where i can sit in my cubicle, at my PC and create new software. :p
I'd like to hear opinions from people who are in any of these fields. Or who are related to tech colleges and know in which direction the industry is heading.

Oil and Gas could be good, opportunities for being placed on exploration vessels developing software to detect the echoes of dropped explosive charges and getting paid a packet in the process.

Cloud computing and business analytics are probably more portable skills though.

i would say cloud computing because that's where the world is converging in the next few years. with the developments in computing power of CPUs plus the improvements and 'internet' becoming more common and available, cloud computing could become the next big thing.

I'd go with one of these

    B. Tech in Computer Science Engineering with specialisation in Open Source & Open Standards in association with IBM

    Why do you ask?
If it's a job or something just do what you like the most.
Cloud computing is becoming really popular so that one might give many opportunities.

It's free, but they are not run by voluntary contributions (not all), if your open source software is good, many other companies pay you so you IMPROVE your software according to their likings.

Right now im working on one like this which makes low-level open source software/languages (and i'm lucky i have to say, not many of this kind in spain....):

And it's great. Much better than the typical code-code-code for random clients (much better and much funnier if you like computing).

I think go to the one you like the most, not the most future proof, if you like it and are good, you'll be fine.

Yeah, but if you are choosing your courses by what you can achieve with that line job wise, you basically are asking which of those is best for a job lol.

Tbh i went with the one that made the most sense to me apart from cloud. Well if you look at Linux, most of the embedded stuff uses it and when i was looking for a job there were loads of embedded jobs going around
