From the creator of Wing Commander, Chris Roberts.
Quote:
The traditional publishers donít believe in PC or Space Sims. Venture Capitalists only want to back mobile or social gaming startups.

I say theyíre wrong. I say that there is a large audience of PC gamers that want sophisticated games built for their platform. And inside this audience, a significant group of people that have always loved space games, and if given a quality one again will be happy to play it.

Ask not what your genre can do for you, but what you can do for your favorite genre.

Letís put high-end PC gaming and Space Sims back on the map!

Star Citizen brings the visceral action of piloting interstellar craft through combat and exploration to a new generation of gamers at a level of fidelity never before seen. At its core Star Citizen is a destination, not a one-off story. Itís a complete universe where any number of adventures can take place, allowing players to decide their own game experience. Pick up jobs as a smuggler, pirate, merchant, bounty hunter, or enlist as a pilot, protecting the borders from outside threats. Iíve always wanted to create one cohesive universe that encompasses everything that made Wing Commander and Privateer / Freelancer special. A huge sandbox with a complex and deep lore allowing players to explore or play in whatever capacity they wish.

Saw the video earlier, this could be really good if they get development started and funded, will be interesting to see how it goes though it already sounds very promising.

Going by the narrative it's unlikely this will be made and for that reason the 'cinematic' trailer is likely designed to garner support, rather than represent any meaningful basis for what the game will in reality look like, at least if they are to follow the scope mentioned. The

The best game currently available that approaches the sheer size of the ideas mentioned would be Eve, and Eve looks mostly like an X3 clone but with 3d models thrown in in certain situations, also being subscription based they have the finances but are unable to make anything that visually resembles the 'cinematic', it's likely possible, but only a very small minority would be able to run it so I strongly doubt an F2P model would be able to make this happen, or any model for that matter.

I would guess the financier is more interested in pledges, in any way possible. I would also imagine the time spent in film production probably also came in handy when creating the 'cinematic' trailer.

In any case, visuals aren't everything.

I also quite liked EVE and I am currently quite enjoying x3 as well, with pretty much all the same aspects promised here; even though X3 was released more than a few years ago. I am also quite sure the next part of the X saga is a lot more likely to happen, given the success of Albion prelude; which was a surprise release; so no extensive media campaigns were necessary, either. As such, I have a lot more faith in the X series to provide a game that will be pretty much at the highest visual quality while keeping realistic commercial and technology constraints in perspective.

Trailer looks good and Chris certainly has awesome ideas for the game! I might even pledge for it.

I'm still waiting for Volition Inc. to make Freespace3, but after 13 years it doesn't seem very likely.

Looks too good to be true to me. Also F2P? Yeah this isn't going to happen. He may make a space sim but don't get your hopes up on it looking anything like that presentation.

Well at least Freespace 2 is under constant improvement and mod teams are making a bunch of other space sims using it at hard-light.net, like BSG: Diaspora, and there's Wing Commander Saga for the WC fans.

The 2nd video has actual gameplay, you can see him go about the carrier and also see how some of the ships fly.

Considering the 2014 release timeframe, i'm not quite sure how people wouldn't expect it to look like the trailer.

The thing is that ppl are used to playing console ports on pc's, so they don't know what pc's are actually capable of.
