So ... it's okay for the USA to spy but not China? It's not cool that they do in the first place but still :p

Funny, I just ordered a Huawei tablet! Hope the chinese don't use the built-in spy app to watch me taking a dump!

Seriously, though, the problem seems to be that the gov't position is that the companies didn't provide enough transparency or documentation and were uncooperative, while the companies' position is that they have a proven track record in other countries and that there is no evidence that any such spy stuff is built in. I see both points, but since most of our electronics are already made in china, I don't see how it could be any bigger a threat than anything else made there. Anyhow, they could always pass a law that says that gov't agencies can't use those brands of electronics if they're so worried.

On a side note, I finally know that Huawei is pronounced "hwa way"!

It's because the chinese government is allowed to "compel" the companies to provide sensitive data about the systems/technology that is being used. If the companies were fully private and able to operate without the threat of the chinese government then it would be less of a problem.

When in doubt, buy local. at least then you can hold people accountable.

This has nothing to do with security.... It's all about the election.... Republicans are trying to redirect attention elsewhere in an attempt to take people's attention off Romney and his own self-destructive comments...and instead get people thinking that their party is really looking out for everyone's best interest (though the tax reforms they want say otherwise)....
