Unhappy AMD Switchable Graphics - 10-01-2012, 01:08 | posts: 4

I have a HP laptop with an AMD 6520g and an AMD 6490M. It is supposed to turn on the 6490M when playing games such has guild wars 2 and borderlands 2 however it doesn't at all according to system monitor and msi afterburner.

I used a different set of drivers 9.001 which aren't official however it is no saying my 6490M is a 7400m graphics chip.

I'd like a set of drivers that actually make use of the crossfire facility that has never been used.

Also I usually just uninstall current drivers, sweep and install new ones. Do I do the same on laptops. I dont want to turn on my laptop and see no display!

First, you should never see no dispaly with just driver updates. Worse case the system will revert to generic drivers plus there is also safe mode to recover.

If the 9.001 beta drivers work then you should use them and test performance. It does not matter how the card is reported, that is just an inf naming issue.

There are registry settings to enable crossfire if it really isn't working. Test the 12.9 beta first and report back.

What do you mean by 'sweep' in your uninstall process?

I have used the drivers, the same problem occours. I can still only play borderlands 2 on 10 fps on the lowest settings, I have tried other games aswell such as guild wars, none of which utilize the second gpu.

I have crossfire one, also by sweeping I mean driver sweep to remove any thing that remains of the previous driver.

I'm intrested by ur registry editing to get crossfire working!

Look at the amdkmdag key as it has the settings. Many keys to change. What does EnableCrossFireAutoLink show a 1 or 0?

And to be honest I'm not so sure AMD has crossfire working on laptops.

Just be careful messing with registry.

Open regedit and enter Ctrl+F. The search window will appear and then enter amdkmdag then keep pressing F3 and you'll get there after about three or four times.

Still not certain any of this will actually help you.

Also, are your clocks correct?

If i'm not mistaken, both GW2 and BL2 still using DX9. APU CFX won't work on DX9 game. Correct me if i'm wrong.

I found it and it is enabled (1). So nothing odd there. I cant force a fixed gpu since HP locked down the bios.

If this is the case then dual gpu laptops are useless, they cant crossfire in opengl either. This is really annoying
