Default Anime - 09-28-2012, 02:19 | posts: 707 | Location: North Wales

There was a thread about this subject a while back but I can not find it.

Just re-watched The Melencholy of Haruhi Suzumiya for the 3rd time as well as the almost 3 hour long The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya for a 4th time.

Still by far the best anime I've seen IMO.

Now, is there any other similar Anime out there I can watch?

I've heard of it, but I really don't know what it's about, and I'm not getting a feel for the general plot when looking over the wiki.

What's the series about? Is there any anime that it relates to?

Haruhi is, i suppose "god" in this and a small group of people around her do what they can to keep her happy. When she is sad bad things in the world happen. She does not know she has this power and can not be told.

It really is a good anime

Hm, I can't think of anything comparable plot line and/or premise. Have you ever heard of Rune Soldier? The majority of the episodes are their own story, so it's really easy to follow, and only a couple episodes come together to form a general plot to close the series. I'd say that the anime itself is pretty generic at a glance, but what it does within the series is done really well. In a nutshell, it's an anime about an accident prone street brawling magician who joins what was supposed to be a female only group of adventurers until he came along. One of the members is a priestess, who received a revelation from the god she worships, and is supposed to help this otherwise clueless and bumbling oaf become a well recognized champion of the people.

Not sure if anything is similar to Haruhi though.

However there are always some other good alternatives.

Try Hyouka.
Probably not similar since it's more about deducting things like Conan (though based on a normal high school life; no murders whatsoever), but just as engrossing.

For older series, you haven't watched Bakemonogatari?
There's also Angel Beats.

I've only watched Haruhi once years ago, all I remember is the dance.

You might want to check out Neon Genesis Evangelion, but that's too much of a mind **** for casual watching.

I was going to mention Hyoka also. I stopped watching after the first few eps. Although Eri is friggin cute and the animation was movie quality, the lead guy was just too normal that he almost reminded me of myself.

I'm not familiar with anime. Why is it it's own genera, and not just called 'cartoons' ?
Besides being serious, is it really any different than stuff like Adventure Time?

That's actually the interesting part for me.
In Hyouka, almost all of the characters probably have pretty much the same common traits of people you've known, so it's easy to relate with and believable; not very out-of-this-world like most anime series.

If you're a Japanese, you'll probably ask why it's called cartoons and not just anime in a Japanese forum.
It's just is.
In Japan, they're simply calling it anime, a short of 'animeeshon', katakana for 'animation'.
Even the special episodes are usually called 'OVA', which stands for 'Original Video Animation'.
Though 'OVA' usually just means it's a story outside the main storyline that's still related like a back story or an alternate storyline, and not always from an 'original story' using the series' characters like the name might imply.

'Anime' being a genre is mainly due to people outside of Japan making it a genre.
It's no different than 'J-Pop' or 'K-Pop' which is just the usual pop music being sung in another language.
Thank God pop music from Ireland or India aren't being called I-Pop; Apple would sue the whole country.

Different in terms of what?
Not all anime series are serious; it has its own sub-genre like comedy or romance, just like any TV shows.
If you're talking art styles, then yes, it's mainly different.
But that doesn't mean there's no anime series that doesn't have the same style as Adventure Time.

It's just that if it's a cartoon made in Japan, voiced in Japanese, and has Japanese cultural reference(s), more often than not people would just refer it as an 'anime' out of habit.

Fun fact : Osamu Tezuka a.k.a. the 'anime Godfather', was mainly inspired by Walt Disney, and was one of Walt's biggest fan.

Isn't that what all anime is? I remember saying that I am like every single character in Naruto. With the exception of Orochimaru & Kabuto.
Naruto is the only anime Iv'e ever watched however.....

What, you can actually make shadow copies of yourself or summon big-ass frogs?
What I meant with 'traits' was everything that makes a character, including how they act, their hobbies, and what they do; not just personality.

You probably want to take a look at Ghost in the Shell movies.
Quite heavy on both action and philosophy.

Is there something extra special about Rune Soldier: Series 2?
On Amazon, it's just about possible to pay as much for postage as it is for the other series.
But there's a seller wanting £40 +p&p for series 2, and it's the only copy of series 2 on sale.
Just wondering what makes this one so special.
Perhaps I've just answered my own question, of course.

One anime I recommend this season is Kokoro Connect. It's about switching bodies with your friends (male and female). **** gets real a few episodes in. You find out there is a guy controlling the body switching and well there's lots of crying and stuff when the truth gets out. I expect I will get misty eyed at the end, because episode 5 really got to me T____T

So the guy controlling the body switching plays god, sorta.

I think the last anime I really enjoyed was dennou coil, and that was a few years back at least, just not found anything that good since (yes i've seen a few series since then, polar bear cafe is contender for best with dennou coil).

After Rurouni Kenshin got tired of anime because of all the crappy filler episodes so now i stick to manga.

I´m currently reading Naruto, History´s strongest disciple and i´m rereading Berserk. The last one is so ****ed up it´s hard to believe but it´s really a great manga.

Jormungand is the story about a weapons dealer and she has a crew of bodyguards. The tight bond that they show between the characters is really what makes the show for me. Kind of like Band of Brothers.

Me and my Flatmate are going through the Gundam series in time line order. Watched The original UC0078 series, now on to Stardust Memories (UC0083) then Zeta, Double Zeta and finally Unicorn! Will watch the Gundam series with their own timelines (Wing, Turn-A, Seed) at later times.

Rune Soldier only had 1 season, so I'm not sure what's going on there. The Rune Soldier series goes for as much as ~$150 new. It's one of those animes where not a whole lot of people knew about it due to lack of advertisement, so it didn't have a long shelf life, but was widely considered to be a gem.
