Default Best AA solution for Borderlands 2? - 09-27-2012, 04:30 | posts: 631

Hello!

I was wondering if there was an Anti-aliasing mode I can possibly set in the inspector for Borderlands 2 that works really well. I'm trying to avoid FXAA as I think it tends to blur games a bit too much for my liking.

I feel like the black outlines in this game (while neat and stylish), look worse when aliasing is obvious.

Thanks for the help!

Oh, if it helps, I'm on driver version 305.53 with a GTX580

Ingame FXAA barely has any blur:

Either than that you can try downsampling, it worked well in BL1.

Downsampling is great. Maybe SGSSAA works but I haven't tried.

I find downsampling from 1620p to 1080p with FXAA gives very sharp result.

Antialiasing compatability flag 0x000000C1 seems to give better performance than 0x080000C1 without any noticeable loss in quality. Both tested with 4x SGSSAA. Unfortuantely it's very difficult to repeat the exact same circumstances so it may well be that I just didn't hit the same stress point.

Note that, as with BL1, neither SGSSAA nor OGSSAA work 100% properly with the black outline and the coloured model underneath. You will occasionally notice some overlap where you can see a slight edge poking out from under the black. Downsampling won't show that, nor will a post-process AA (SMAA, FXAA, etc). I'm honestly not sure why it happens.

FXAA looks the best out of those comparisons to me, everything else still has a fair amount of aliasing.

I was using ingame FXAA, but later switched to SMAA.
If I had the horsepower I'd proly go for 3200x1800 downsampling + SMAA, or perhaps 4xSGSAA+SMAA.

But all of them are fair value IMHO.

Mr Korush summed it up well:

So on balance, for the best performance and smoothest outlines, FXAA seems to be a winner. On the other hand, if you want to prevent very fine detail from being blurred, and don't mind edges which are a touch rougher, then SMAA is recommended instead. There seems little need to implement other more performance-intensive methods of AA such as SuperSampling, since to get a better result than FXAA or SMAA you'd have to use such a high level of SSAA that the framerate would be crushed.

You may also wish to consider an FXAA Injector, which would approach the same level of quality as the in-game FXAA option, but also allow for the application of sharpness tweaks and other graphical modifications.

Yeah, but you need the horsepower to run it at 4x

SGSSAA using 0x000000C1 looks quite alright, but you'll need at least 4x for it to look acceptable, which I'm most certainly not planning on doing on a single card.
I've also tried downsampling from 3840x2160 but obviously it's roughly the same result as 4x.
Lastly, the in-game FXAA seems fairly situational as it doesn't really appear to work most of the time. Most notably the outlines.

Comparison: FXAA | SMAA

I've been rocking a combination of 1620p, SMAA + LumaSharpen, and enabling FXAA after all that in-game. That actually works quite well.

Some screenshots I've taken (damn this game can look good):

I personally enjoy turning the Vibrance setting on on SweetFX for Borderlands 2 as well, same combo as the guy above otherwise.

You cannot compare FXAA and real AA using screenshots because FXAA often fails in motion. That's one of reasons SMAA was developed.

You mean TXAA?

SMAA does sh1t for aliasing in motion.

FXAA and SMAA 1x won't ever be able to fully solve the pixel crawling problem, you need multiple samples (MSAA or *SSAA) to solve that problem. Even SMAA 2T (or the 1x + the temporal) isn't good enough to solve the pixel crawling problem.

I use the 0x0000045 flag (how ever many zero's there really are. i dont have inspector in front of me at the moment). Its the one with dungeon defenders, etc. and Borderlands 1 uses it so i figured "hey... its mostly the same engine"

I use this one because i notice no difference in GPU load when using the C1 flag. That's because the scene isnt even antialiased when using the 0x------C1 flag. The stairs on that bandit hut on the main menu were still jagged and the mountain tops were still jagged in the distance. I use the 0x------45 flag and it worked with 32xAA and 4x SGSAA and i still get 60 fps when PhysX isnt on the scene. my gpu load goes up to to 95% then and thats with a GTX 480. Memory usage only up to 1300mb at most.
