Default Running gPU on same clock speed 24/7 - 09-25-2012, 23:24 | posts: 3,233 | Location: Sunny Scotland

so, i'm thinking i may try forcing the max clock 24/7 to do away with the gpu boost, just to give it a try.
Folks, are there any major reasons against this, i do the same with cpu - no power saving voltage nor clock lowering, i got my cpu running 4.7 always (i.e.no turbo and with full voltage).
What d'you think?

It will somewhat decrease the lifetime of the card but probably nothing to worry about.

I would just think about the constant higher temps more than anything.

I think GPU boost is the dumbest thing Nvidia has ever come up with. I stumbled upon THIS back in August. Read it, disabled gpu boost, and haven't lost a minutes sleep over doing so.

I didn't quite get the article. Why is GPU boost dumb? As the article says: "Disabling of GPU Boost provides no performance benefit, but only a higher power consumption/noise of the card."

FYI, you wont be able to use any 3rd party app for overclocking other than Inspector. So I just want to put that out there. The overlays will still work, but the overclocking functionality will not because of the P-state being disabled.

It's dumb because Nvidia is trying to tell their customers what's best for them. If I was worried about power consumption, I would turn off a light every once and a while.

How is it not best for the customers to save power without losing performance?

Turning off lights to save power would require manual labor. Turbo is an automatic feature. If your lights would automatically turn off when no one is in the room that'd be a good thing to have. In fact, that happens in your fridge.

At least implement a function for those of us who want to turn that feature off and not have to resort to work a rounds like what i posted. I for one am not worried about saving a few $ a year on my light bill. If I was , i'd turn off the 4 computer I have running 24/7 and quit folding.

I don't understand why you feel the need to disable the feature?

To me the whole turbo boost is a gimmick and nothing more.
P states is a good thing for power saving when you look at power consumption of a video card in 2D & 3Dlow/high power mode.
eg: 300Mhz/1600mhz compared to 1006Mhz/3000Mhz
(yeah I know my clocks are not accurate, but you get the idea)
The power saving makes sense.
But when you look at P state power saving for turbo, it's just a gimmick imho.
eg: 1006Mhz to 1100Mhz
Yeah awesome power saving, not.. bah
Sure if turbo mode was upping the clocks by 300Mhz+ then maybe it could be justified as good power saving...

But in the same sense if the turbo mode isn't causing erratic behavior in games/apps and windows, I can't see the point in trying to fix what's not broken.
But each their own....

Well those silly benchmarks don't compare to real live gaming (what most people buy their gaming rigs for.
For example strolling along in BL2, turn a corner and you have a bazillion effects hurling towards you, at this point the gpu goes into boost mode, BUT -it takes a deep breath first and this can be felt /seen in-game.
So yeah for gaming gpu noob boost is pants.

i've heard other folks mentioning it, the transition to boost mode doesn't go un-noticed, i guess most folks just get used to it, i've had enough of it now though.

What would be the command to re-enable boost?

-resetAllPStates

But be careful with that command line though. I've read a few threads about people having issues with it not working correctly. If it freezes your system, just reboot. Then uninstall and reinstall your drivers. You'll be back to normal then.

What I do is reset my clocks and voltages back to default, then use the command line. Works like a charm for me.

Another thing, if you want your card to idle normally you'll need to follow this guide.

I got mine @ 1228MHz now, didn't want to go overboard, it idles around 38C now, before it was around 26C, but whatever.

Edit: gonna change fan profile now to accomodate the OC ...

LOL glad it's working for you.

EDIT:

You may want to be aware of this as well.

Quote:
EXPLANATION!!!
after a while i discovered that the multimonitor fix opens up before afterburner as a result the overclock cannot apply, the .bat file delays startup of the monitor fix for 5 seconds to give time for afterburner to apply first. you may need to tweak the time its as simple as changing the number in the bat file time may change depending on how many startup items you have.
Use that .bat file if you start having problems. I have EVGA Precision set to start with windows and for some reason it seems to be the last program to load. So I haven't ran into the problem that person described.
