Default Intel Increases Overclocking Potential in Haswell Processors - 09-21-2012, 07:25 | posts: 16,952 | Location: Guru3D testlab

Overclocking has become increasingly difficult ever since Sandy Bridge and it is made a bit more difficult with Ivy Bridge mainly because it runs *hotter because Intel decided to use a substandard the...

I hope this means they won't attempt to save 0.12 cents per processor by using garbage thermal paste again.

Making things up to push Haswell?!

SB is easy to clock, not much need for change.
Especially if heat is the limiting factor anyway, we can have a 5THz FSB but we cant use it.

All they need do (for a bit of convenience) is unhook the SATA controllers and other clock sensitive components from the FSB, job done.
But that wont help a cpu clock if you arent even maxing the multiplier.
Perhaps this is just for LN2.

awsome news , looking forward to haswell. Bring it on. I hope they dont suffer from the cold bug plagued on the SB , for us extreme overclockers.

i wonder what the top multi will be, as the base clock ratio changing was not so good for overclocking on SB-E

Increasing the overclock 'potential' and actually seeing tangible benefits are two different things. Intel could have given Ivy Bridge a 200x multiplier limit, but that means nothing due to heat and other issues.

To really increase the potential, they need to do things like they are doing AND back it up with things like going back to using fluxless solder etc.
