Half-life 3 is open world, launching after 2013 – Report
Quote:
Half-Life 3 is an open world shooter that will launch after 2013, a source close to Valve has allegedly revealed.
Speaking with Journaldugamer – by way of OXM – the source said that Half-Life 3 features “total revision” following a “very chaotic” development schedule.
It was said to have been developed as a straight-up shooter before being reined back towards puzzles and exploration. The source also stated that Half-Life 3 will have an “open-world, quests and NPCs”
What do you think? Vortigaunt fodder, or is this likely? Let us know below.

I prefer half-life to be half-life, not some elder scrolls wannabe.
Quests? Really?...LMAO..."Mr. Freeman, I left the launch key at my apartment in City 17. Building 8, room 125b..on the counter in the kitchen next to the bananas...I'd get it myself, but I'd probably get annihilated by the ant lions..I'm far more important than you."

I won't believe anything Half-Life 3 related until I see it in the "New Releases" tab on Steam.

total bull. HL has always been about scripted well paced FPS gameplay. Open world would just make it something its not. (the "at best" mediocre Rage comes to mind)

Maybe valve work hard in streaming code (because was the big/main problem in source) and they have some kind of demo where they show stream and big maps. And maybe they use hl3 assets in this internal demo and maybe they want some open/big maps without loading pauses in their game. Do you remember episode 2 last chapter? So I think this person is talking about those big maps and not about a real open world.

Having gameplay that is too linear isn't good, but having a game that's too 'open world' isn't either. Some people might like the idea of a truly open world concept, but not having a clear goal and point to usually actually makes the game less interesting, as you are left wondering what to do next. Also, in an open-world environment you can miss gameplay elements. The ideal scenario is having linear gameplay, but make it so it doesn't feel linear, something which Half-Life 2 did nicely.
The obvious other very, very bad thing that they could do for Half-Life 3 is in any way affect the PC version, even from the point of concept to finality, with making it also suitable for consoles. It's really stupid that developers dumb games down on PC to be level with consoles, where in fact only the console version should be dumbed down, which would actually encourage Microsoft and Sony to make worthwhile improvements on their next releases. Of course, going by the rumoured specs for consoles it would be very unfortunate for gaming if the next round of consoles lasts as long as the current gen.

I wouldn't mind an open world GTA: Half Life type game.
Better than Crye Engine fidelity, a large explorable world (whats left of it) with portal technology to take you into space or other dimensions (worlds) and missions that are open for you tackle as you see fit with npcs or co-op support!
Why not? You can still have all the story, guns, technology but more choices to fulfill on them. Some missions must be scripted but you can do side missions or other quests that may help you recruit better npcs or equipment or intelligence to help you on those missions.
A living breathing world in the HL universe would be fairly awesome.
And I would like to re-visit black mesa!

Open world? Would be hilarious if it has annoying friends who keep calling you to do activities with, dating and mini games like crawling around air ducts to retrieve pet head crabs or fooling around with the gravity gun imagine Gordon with spoken dialogue ... or maybe it will be like DAO Honestly I won't be surprised if they won't make anything at all, the story is so weird by the time Episode 2 ends. Rather see a new IP again.

Hope this isn't true, as much as i love open world games, and am pleased to see that more developers are embracing them (especially for FPS as third person games still had a fair amount) i don't want there to be no linear, story driven games anymore.
We need a good mixture of both so we have variety in our games, but with gaming becoming more online orientated every year and people demanding more value for their game you can see how short, intense single player games could eventually become something only retro gamers indulge in.
