Default Soundcard recommendations? - 09-19-2012, 08:32 | posts: 52

My initial choice was Creative Sound Blaster Recon3D Fatal1ty Professional, then I read some reviews, and well, they don't seem too favorable. At least, not as an all around card.
I listen to quite a bit of music and also watch a lot of stuff(ranging from various animu's to stuff like Game of Thrones and Sherlock), so a card which is only best for gaming purposes doesn't really suit me.
So yeah, is there any all around card or something which you would recommend?
If the info is needed, here's the rest of my build:
CPU: Intel i5 3570K(For overclocking, overclocking for Wii/Gamecube/PS2 emulation purposes.)
System Cooling: Noctua nh-d14
Graphics: MSI N680GTX Twin Frozr 4GD5/OC
Case: SilverStone Raven 2
Motherboard: ASUS Sabertooth Z77 (USB 3.0, SATA 6Gb/s)
PSU: 750 Watt Corsair TX750M PSU
RAM: 8GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600Mhz (2x4GB) Memory
Operation System: Genuine MS Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit Edition
Harddrive: 2TB SATA 3.0Gb/s, 7200RPM, 32MB Cache HDD
Optical Drive: 12X Blu-ray Disc (BD) Combo (Reads BD and Writes to DVD/CD)
Sound card: (removed)
Internet: D-Link Wireless DWA-556 Xtreme N PCI Express Desktop Adapter
Keyboard: Razer Lycosa
Mouse: Razer DeathAdder

I like the ASUS Xonar series. I bought a Recon3D when it was released and exchanged for the ASUS DX card. I got money back and unbelievable performance. So, would I recommend the DX, YES!
Don`t forget about decent speakers and/or headset. A good source playing through good drivers is the only way you`ll be able to really use either one. It`s similar to having a decent gfx card, then you`d want at least a 1920x1080 monitor to really make use of gfx card. Will gfx card work at 1280x1024? Of course, but you see the point right?

Depends how much you want to spend on a soundcard...
The more expensive choices in the Xonar range such as the ST and STX are a big step up in sound quality compared to the DX.
And like the previous poster said you will need decent amp/speakers or headphones to appreciate it.

It would be help to know what headphones (if any) you are using with your computer? what if any analog speakers your have hooked up? or if the audio is being sent to something like a receiver or other?

I think I will go with a Asus Xonar DX, since for reason I am unable to find reviews on the STX, maybe I am searching it wrong, I dunno.

As for the headphones I use, um, I just use some Skullcandy headphones, not sure what type/model they are. Welp, I feel stupid now.
Assuming they are not good enough, are there any you would recommend?

If you can get hold of an Auzentech Forte it's a really great card too. X-Fi chip but on a much higher quality board with a headphone amp and replaceable OpAMPS. Pretty much the X-Fi "done right" IMO.
If I had to replace my Fatality I would go with an Auzentech. For some reason they seem to be getting scarce tho. I'm getting rather worried they are packing it in...

If you are going to be listening to alot of music, I can highly recommend an STX.

That card and a nice set of cans and some lossless files....well....it is heaven
