Default Dual Rail 650w PSU - 09-17-2012, 11:31 | posts: 427

Hi Gurus,

I'll be doing a couple of builds this weekend and needed to ask something.

A dual rail 650W PSU would be fine for the following, right?:

AMD Phenom II 1090T
Asus M5A99X EVO
4GB DDR3
GTX 460 SLI
x2 7200rpm HDD (SATA II)
x1 DVD/RW Drive (IDE)

I believe that it should be fine but I've not used dual rail before and just wanted to be sure, before putting it all together and then it doesn't work.

Thanks all.

The amount of rails is irrelevant, what matters is brand, wattage, and total amps.

I thought you might ask me that

That I sadly don't know. It's currently not in my possession and I'll have to find out that information. I'll edit once I know.

I got the info about the PSU finally but turns out that there is only two 6 pin connections so SLI was a little out of the question so we built mine and his over the weekend and both systems are up and running.

The PSU in question was for my mate's pc so he wanted to leave it as it is, with just 1 gfx.

I'm back in Poland now so might need to wait until I'm home again but I'll provide the info, in case you have any ideas:

Thank you again, all.

Well, true. But knowing the manufacturer, you can say how likely it is to be a good unit rather than a bad or a mediocre unit. Good manufacturers tend to produce high quality units regardless of brand, while bad manufacturers only produce poor quality and cheaply built units regardless of the platform.

generally with SLI, you'll want either a beefy single rail, or more than 2 rails.

if going the multi rail path, you'll ideally want a beefy 12v rail for the CPU, and then a beefy 12V rail per GPU assuming each rail will have sufficient power for each GPU. or you can go for a beefy dual rail GPU that has enough amps on one of the rails to handle all the cards in SLI.

normally i prefer to just go for a PSU with a single beefy rail, just because i dont need to balance the load between rails. its a lot simpler.
