It would be good if that price reduction translates to the real world. It may make the HD8930 or even the HD8950 an attractive option if they are similarly priced to what the HD7870 was when released.

Sounds nice, I'll be looking at these and the 8900 Series when launched to upgrade my two 6950's. Hopefully we'll see something by Xmas/New Year that would be nice.

This, if true, may well explain why there have been multiple price reductions to the existing range in a relatively short amount of time.

Inventory clearing I'm guessing.

Original leaks : http://translate.google.com/translat...2FID%3AhKcZJDn
Take it as rumor or even not real specs..

Outside memory bandwith... in reality taken in account with 1100mhz boost vs 925mhz on the 7970, outside 2560x1600, add some optimisation and the results should be really close of each other, maybe between 7970 and 7970Ghz ( if we trust theses specs )

SP performance look close, but for DP (not really important on a middle range card ) , we are speaking about 1/16 vs 1/4 DP rate .. ( 25% performance of the 7970 ).

But anyway, this bring little to non info on the HD8970.

I want the "Oland" to come out soon, and to trump the 7970/680 buy 10%-20% in performance, at $499 MSRP (CAN). Fingers crossed.

To be a success it needs to be better then that, new tech flag ship cards used to be 60-80% better then the last gen. This time both camps failed, AMD for coming up short, and NV for milking the mid range card @ high end prices.

Well I don't think it to be the flagship. The 8870 "Oland" to be released soon would be a huge success. With the 8970 flagship to follow the release of GTX whatever, early next year ...but really time will tell and we must wait to see?

I would love to see AMD release a Premium mid-range product that would beat the current flagships, I can see it now, them holding that performance crown high for the final quarter of the year.

Dont forget this card is not set for the next month... the 8970 will be released before and surely not before end of Q4 2012 - Jan 2013.

I dont think AMD plan to release the 8870-8850 before the flagship.

Nice. My relatively new 7950s are already starting to look 'old'. Not to mention the huge price drop after I bought them.

It seems GPUs are the component in the PC that sees larger/faster price drops. I used to think buying a powerful but 'price dropped' GPU was the way to to as far as buying GPUs are concerned. But these days the next generation is always around the corner and takes away all the excitement from the current 'previous gen' purchase.

Base your GPU purchases on what what you need, not on what is the shiniest and newest. I've had my 5870's for years now and they still run my games adequately. I've had them for so long I would never consider them to have been a bad purchase. Your 7950's have so much life in them it would be foolish to consider dumping them. Spend money on more games and upgrade your GPU when they can no longer play games to your satisfaction.

I've been fortunate enough to catch some really good deals on my last 2 upgrades - to the point of where I sold my HD 5850 and almost broke even when I upgraded to my HD 6970, and then again when I bought my HD 7970 I only spent about $50 overall after selling the previous card. So, if you time it right and hunt for deals you can sometimes do pretty well with a more frequent upgrade.

*I must confess the only real reason I upgraded the last time was because I ran out ov VRAM in Skyrim. :p

Looking very good if that is true, should be very nippy and like the even though it's bigger the power consumption is lower, also hoping the pricing is accurate as well.

Yes I will be keeping them for now, until something comes out that I cannot run at 60fps at max settings. I will also be tempted to side-grade to a single gpu solution that can provide the same performance for half the watts. Could 8970 be it?

I have a feeling 8xxx series will be here by Christmas. Finger crossed.

Feels like the 7000 series was launched only a few days ago .. nvidia shouldn't be far behind as well. Let's see what they've got!
