Is it me or is this like the latest craze right now? It's basically THE song that everyone's been talking about. It has a catchy beat, but seriously? This is probably getting worse than "Call me Maybe" lol.

Hell, some radio stations in Toronto like this one have been playing it (they normally play English programming only):

I thought it was great song then suddenly mainstream and everywhere! now i hate it not.

Just what tho the popularity. I went to see the video on youtube when it had some 300k views.... -.-

This guy more or less has way more talent then most of the top artists on youtube

and has had a long career already. Rather popular K-pop artist in SK . :o

And his most simple song got all the spotlights cause catchy, with funky dance moves.

The song and video while extremely stupid, actually does have meaning compared to most europop songs.

Gangnam is the name of the extremely wealthy part of Seoul, where all the rich people stay.

Basically he is singing about how he wants to become a rich person, that's why you see him in the video behaving as if he's doing "rich person" activities, such as horse riding, swimming in a personal swimming pool, spa, playing in the beach but then the camera keeps pulling out and revealing he is doing all these activities in public areas for the normal commoners, gangsters etc.

So basically the song is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the materialistic lifestyle of the rich people in Gangnam, and the desire of a common person to emulate their behaviour and how stupid he looks in the process.

Psy is a bit like Korean version of Weird Al.
He's the 'local jester' who's known to satirize almost everything in Korea.
But instead of making song parodies, he usually composes a new one.

As for the song itself, well, obviously there'd be people who likes it and those who doesn't.
I found it catchy without having to understand what the song's really about.
Heck, probably 80% of those who likes it never gave jack sh!t about it.

As for how viral it's been, well, if you can explain why 'Call Me Maybe' and 'Friday' went viral as well, that's probably the answer.
Personally, I can't.
...well, aside from 'explaining' with some derogatory terms.
