they hope to find water or micrscopic plant life that may have been buried under the rock over millions of years, they are landing in a crater from an asteroid impact so as to start as deep as possible in the planets crust

Supposing they find the water or microscopic plant life that's supposedly millions of years old, then what?

It seems a HUGE waste of time & money...

It answers questions to the origins of life. If you can't see the significance of that then you are obviously blind.

Not to mention it's a huge technological achievement.

Btw, are you one of those people who thinks CERN's experiments are a waste of time and money too?

Add to this the theory (one of many) which implies that Earth's life originated from Mars and came here via meteors.
(Last year a meteor from mars fell down in morocco I think.)

All in all, it's fundamental scientific research.

You know that by the time you took to type these two answers, you could have highlighted the "CERN" text, then right click/search on google.

Very true, only it doesn't change the fact I've never heard of CERN till NOW!

They do say you learn new things everyday. Now I know what CERN is.

I used good old Wikipedia, always does the job.

So is there a video of this thing landing on Mars, or a video of them deploying the rover from the capsule, or a video from the original shuttle that launched? Or is it just an animation? Will the rover take video footage? Surely that is the first thing they would do

i hate when people say this ****.

everything done is to learn about the solar system/universe. each successful mission is another small step in the journey to eventually colonizing another planet. you think things just happen overnight?

nasa is all just a waste of money blah blah blah. sure lets do nothing at all, and just doom oursleves to this planet with limited resources and an ever expanding population.

as a species we must evolve and expand otherwise we will 100% end in failure. if the space exploration is ever cut we might as well just lay down and die.

By the time they colonize ANY planet the world as well as everything in it will be long gone.

The way things are now, global warming as well as another world war isn't far away round the corner...

This is reality & as of now we are fuccking the world up...

i never said they shouldnt spend money to preserve this planet. clearly we must otherwise we probably wont make it to the next century when off world
colonization would likely happen.

but dont say its a big waste when there are much larger wastes of resources out there (pointless wars). also, since you didnt even know about CERN, im not going to waste time arguing with you.

expansion and preservation must go hand in hand

From what I've read, yeah the landing should have been captured/recorded by onboard cameras. But we'll have to wait a few days/weeks to get it.
Color pictures will be taken later this week or next week, when curiosity's "periscope" will be deployed.
ATM we have this
http://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/catalog/PIA15973

And here's a video of the launch, back in november 2011:

And then people around the world come together to watch a marvel of human engineering as a probe lands perfectly on another planet and all you can think to do is **** all over it.

Maybe if we had less people like you, that World War wouldn't be looking so inevitable.

This is why we can't have nice things.

A fantastic achievement. I'd recommend staying away from comment sections on websites reporting news of it, however. The amount of ignorance regarding the subject is absolutely astonishing.

Anyone complaining about it being a 'waste' of money should take a look at this article: http://gizmodo.com/5813257/air-condi...-entire-budget

I'm not anti-military by any means, but considering how much money is spent on wars in other countries? Scientific advancement has the potential to aid the entire human race. It shocks me people complain about the trifle spent on NASA all things considered.
