For some folks, m0ar just isn't enough.
Nice review Hilbert. I see Asus does not disappoint with this board.

I actually ended up buying the Maximus 5 Rampage based on Hilberts last review, upgrading from my X58 EVGA board and the differences are like night and day. ASUS really puts solid work into their ROG boards, it just feels like quality even when you're holding it in your hand, let alone when you get inside of it.
I also have to say the new ROG Suite thingy is probably the first motherboard software I've installed and left installed. It uses little ram and the interface actually has a decent layout, not some stupid program with random logos and **** everywhere.
The only thing I don't like about the Z77 is the lack of SATA RAID ports. My X58 had 6 for RAID, this only has 4, as a result I need a RAID card for my RAID-5 setup. Which is no problem really because I've been wanting to go the route of something a little more robust.
But yeah, if anyone is looking for a board, definitely go this route. It's solidly constructed, the UEFI layout is amazing, the board layout is amazing, the feature set is amazing and so far I haven't run into any issues at all.

These bios' look ways too complicated for me, same as the all the other brands of mobos, except Gigabyte, i dunno but their bios' are really easy to navigate and don't need a masters degree to understand.
just my 2C.

Well I'm on the market for a brand new setup and I was wondering if this board will allow me to set a CFX of HD7970 @ PCIe 3.0 x16. I'm sorry but it is not clear for me seeing "5 x PCIe 3.0/2.0 x16 (x16 or dual x8 or x8/x16/x8 or x8/x16/x8/x8)" and not a clear "PCIe 3.0 dual x16" as option. Considering the price I want to avoid any mistake as it is for an eyefinity rig
Would you have the answer please that wipe my doubts ?
Thanks a lot mates

If it has one of those switching chips, technically the 16 x PCIe 3.0 becomes 2 x 16 x PCIe 2.0 as I understand it. My motherboard has 2 of the older version of these chips (NF200), each of which split the 2 x 16 PCIe 2.0 lanes into 4 x 16 PCIe 1.1 lanes, each of which can then be split into 8 x 8 PCIe 1.1 lanes. I think that's how it works anyway, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks for the review! Very much looking forwards to reading it, admittedly the ROG Gene has my attention from amongst the asus z77s but this review could swing that, the Gene beats the Sniper g1 M3, i wonder if the ROG extreme beats the Sniper 3, ..the Sniper 3 has dual x16 gen3, whereas it seems only dual x8 on the extreme although a triple /quad card setup on the extreme has more optimized lane speeds.
5 x PCIe 3.0/2.0 x16 (x16 or dual x8 or x8/x16/x8 or x8/x16/x8/x8)

For something in the $400 price range I'm not impressed. These Asus boards always come at a premium price when competing boards are always $100+ cheaper. As a side note, I think it's absolutely hideous.

It's $5 more than the z77 g1 sniper 3 (imo the board it was made to compete with).

Edit: Found the right one, $300 price range, first match was $280: http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=70...e&promoid=1360
That's $100 less than Asus's board.
For comparison the same website has the Maximus V Extreme for $411: http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=75...nufacture=ASUS

Yes the ROG extreme hasn't arrived yet to the google shopping sites either, the sniper3 has been listed cheaper there for a while.
indeed if you shop around online for the sniper3, at least in uk you can find it for £250, you gotta pay around £300 still for the asus board, so sure.
In any case the z77 range has some stellar boards, i'd pick probably the Gene right now, i don't have a huge case anyways, the pcie lanes are very close on the Gene though, it's just too dandy to ignore lol.
