Default Gigabyte GA-Z77X-D3H continuous short beeps due to RAM - 07-17-2012, 09:11 | posts: 1,697 | Location: San Diego, CA

Hello, I recently upgraded my pc to a Gigabyte GA-Z77x-D3H and Intel i7 2700k. I am using the same 2 sticks of RAM that i used in the previous build. (G.Skill F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL). If i put both sticks in, I get very many continuous short beeps followed by it powering off automatically. It will then turn on by itself and produce the same continuous short beeps and cycles.

When I remove 1 stick of RAM, it boots to windows just fine. I even tried to swap the stick, including another 16GB pair of Corsair Vegeance and they all work when installed alone. I have also tried different slots, but only slot 1 & 2 work with a single stick. when i put 2 sticks in, it never works, no matter the slot.

I have found this issue online, but do not see a fix. Does anyone know what the issue is? I checked the voltage in bios, and it is 1.5v as the ram needs. The timing looks like default as well. Any ideas?

Did you load optimized defaults and try it? How about with XMP settings? I recall I had a similar problem when I got my board, cant remember what I did that fixed it. Post your problem at Gigabyte forum as well. It appears a lot of complaints about this board are posted there.

thanks alanm, optimized defaults didn't work. Where do i set XMP settings?

I was able to get both sticks to work, if i used single channel. (putting it in the slots next to each other). Maybe the dual channel is broken? Maybe I should just RMA it, although pulling everything out and putting it back is going to be annoying.

Re XMP, its just a long shot (under the memory settings in the bios). Good DDR3 brands usually have XMP, which are Intel certified performance profiles within the dimms which sets dram frequency, voltages, CPU multi to run at enhanced performance. I recall someone saying they were able to boot up with it after other attempts at normal booting failed (probably due to a slight vdimm bump). But TBH, to me, its sounds like you may have a faulty board, especially since you say you've tried different sets of modules which all failed in slots 3 and 4. Before you RMA, try to slightly bump up the vdimm to 1.55 to see if that will help, in case the board is not delivering the rated 1.5v to those slots.

thanks alanm, i upped it to 1.55v, but it still didn't help. i currently have both sticks in Channel A, and it works. I just tested today by putting both sticks in Channel B, (which should still be single channel) and it doesnt work. I think its pretty safe to conclude that Channel B slots are bad. I will RMA it and just get another board.

Thanks again for your time.
