Default Is my HD4870 dying? Need Help! - 07-08-2012, 21:29 | posts: 2

Hi guys,

I have an Asus Eah4870 HDI Dark Knight 1GB, and lately, I have some weird problems in 3D Applications : Anti aliasing doesn't work anymore, games that looked fine a while ago look all jagged now, with weird surface problems (in X3TC I have dark surfaces and jagged edges, in Alan Wake American Nightmare there are artefacts on Wake's shirt, light vertex bugs and jagged edges everywhere, Dead Space 2 too, Ghost Recon, even Chess Titans looks horrible)
If I activate AA or not looks exactly the same, same if I force it with CCC or AtiTrayTools).

It's not a driver problem, I have two boots (One with XP and one with Windows 7) with different drivers installed (11.something on XP and 12.6 on 7) and the problem appears in both, Dx9 and Dx10 both. On my XP partition I have Dead Island that looked beautiful and now all the edges are jaggy.

To be sure, on my 7 partition I tried the 12.3, 12.4 and 12.6 drivers (with clean install each times) and it looked exactly the same.

As a last resort I flashed my BIOS with the original one (mine was unmodified too but what the hell, I tried anyway) and it didn't change anything.

My clocks are on normal settings: 750 and 900, voltage is normal, I didn't change anything.

On some games, to avoid the D601 crash this GPU is know for, I underclocked it to 700 but even with those games, underclocked or not, same problem.

The only different thing I saw is when I reinstalled CCC I had a warning it detected another device = Device ID 0xaa30 Vendor ID 0x1002 but this is the only CG I ever had on this machine.

So anybody has any advice? I really fear my GPU is dying but maybe I overlooked something, so before I let go of 480 Euros for a 7970, I'd like to try to make it work.

Thanks for bearing with me guys!

If I'm not mistaking the 12 divers may not support your 4870. The latest ones anyways that your trying. I would try using a older drive, 10 and/or 11. If that doesn't work, it very well could be the video card or something else!

Running a 4850 in one of my older rigs and the 10.6 works great.

Tried to update to the 12s and had a few problems.

Went back to 10.6 and no issues.
12.7 Betas work great on my Sapphire 7970 OC card though.

As pointed out, Could be card issues as these cards are getting long in tooth.

It's not the drivers, I did not have these problems at first with the same drivers, it just started out of the blue.
The card is crapping out I think, oh well.
I'm gonna buy a new rig altogether, I have some money socked away, I think MB: Asrock Z68 Extreme7, CPU: i7 3770 3.4 Ghz, ASUS HD7970 DCUII TOP and 8gb RAM (by the by, a 1000watts PSU would be enough?)
The only thing that bothers me is will I be able to take my HDD with my OS installed and put it in my new rig without reinstalling everything?

As to PS a Good 700-850 would be fine with headroom.

As to OS, Since your changing the MB< Not a good idea even if would work.

Just start backing everything up and start with a clean slate with a new rig.

Or get another drive to install OS on and could then transfer what you want on
the Primary drive. Then Formatt your old drive.

JMO.
