Question New to Nvidia drivers. Is the fps limiting in the drivers now? - 05-25-2012, 19:28 | posts: 2,364 | Location: Shropshire, UK

I heard a little while ago that Nvidia were going to put frame limiting into the drivers. Are we still waiting for that or is it already in there somewhere? I can't seem to find it!

Thanks all.

Sy.

Not yet, but you could try adaptive Vsync. It will do it's best to Keep your screen from tearing if it dips below your monitors max refresh rate.

Good point. Where do I find that roughly? Still trying to find my way round the drivers! Is that an option you pick per game basis?

Nvidia Control Panel
Manage 3D Settings
Scroll down to "Vertical Sync", Change this to adaptive vsync and Apply.

You can choose to do this Globally or per application. It's up to you as the user.

If you do per application it will of course, only activate for that application you applied it to. Globally it will work for everything until you change it.

FPS limiting has been in the drivers for a while now. You need NVidia Inspector to use it.

Or Just use the limiter in afterburner or precision, gives smoother gameplay than the nvidia limiter. (at least on my rig anyway)

How do I use that in Afterburner? Is it under Video capture tab?

Can this be assigned per game?

Does anyone know when Nvidia might be adding this feature to the drivers?

You have to open up the MSI On-Screen Display server (EVGA On-Screen Display server for EVGA Precision).

Click on the wrench icon to open the server properties, and set it to what you want, 0 means its off.

I think it works globaly with Precision/Afterburner but i know you can set it for different games with Nvidia Inspector.

I'm not sure how you can unsmoothly limit the frame rate.
When I put it to 60fps it limits to 60fps just as Bandicam did (back when it was a thing, and everyone was raving to have the feature put into the drivers), just as Afterburner does, and the drivers.

You can also set fps individually by creating a file called applicationname.exe.cfg in the correct dir.

Afterburner does this automatically when you add an executable for a profile. You can set FPS limit on a per-application basis.

When using the nvidia limiter I got what looked like 30fps no matter what the limit was set at.
Using Afterburner or Precision i did not get such issues.
Using Vsync now so all is irrelevant.

If your fps is below vsync, you will get tearing by design.
On some setups/games it doesnt matter much.
But if it does, you may need to use vsync only.

I'm using Afterburner to measure FPS, and it works fine using the drivers.

Yes. In early beta versions we needed to set it manually, that is until Unwinder added the handy UI options.

Do some benchmarks in your favorite games and you'll probably find that standard vsync performance (with triple buffering) is pretty much on par with that of adaptive vsync, without the tearing.

If that happens time to turn down some AA levels.

Afterburner limiter is fine.

No I don't get it. Limiting a game that is capable of 60fps with Banicam, Dxtory, Afterburner or NVCP (drivers) TO 60fps - IS 60fps. 60 frames simply does not look different when being limited with a another utility. Unless you are mistakingly combining vsync with Afterburner alone and giving the impression of extra smoothness, limiting frames was possible before it was implemented into both Afterburner and the drivers. Likewise, both solutions work the same as the solutions before them (though obviously Dxtory itself IS another program).
That is all.
