I get this from time to time (actually it's happening more often recently).
The problem occurs with range of different drivers both on Ubuntu x64 and Win7 x64.

Any tool that I can test/log errors from the video card ?

hardware:
dell studio 1555, intel core 2 duo, 4gb ram, ati mobility radeon hd4570

I've seen this a lot, looks like a heat issue. Can you clean the innards out, or do you know someone who could do it for you? If this has been done ignore me

No I didn't. It's kinda hard to open DELL STUDIO. But I can't say it's overheating - my sensors show aroung 65-73 C for the GPU temp. What's the max temp for this kind of cards(mobility)?

My HD5770 benches at 72C so that doesn't seem too excessive to me. Then again I'm not too familiar with the mobility GPUs.

I'm not very convinced is a overheating issue anymore. I install sensors apps to watch the temp and when I play some games my temp goes to 80-90C but still working VGA doesn't crash.
These crashes occur mostly when I'm watching Flash or a Movie and my GPU temp is around 60-70C.

Just came across this accidentally, if you are still trying to solve this: this is a connectivity issue of the GPU and/or the video memory modules. Reflow is the solution, I just did it last week with my Studio 1555 and worked like charm!
Before it I had the same experience as you, was not overheating and crashing with Flash. (Why Flash I don't know, maybe it uses the video memory much)

Here is one way to do it, however scary as it looks like - it works!:

Good luck!
