Default i7 2600k runs hotter than old i7 920? - 05-04-2012, 14:38 | posts: 278 | Location: Out there in Iowa

New rig but finding the i7 2600k at default runs hotter than my old i7 920. This is with stock cooler. It seems to heat up even in some menus (maybe because stuff is loading in background?).

It can go from 40 to 70 just loading some menus. Funny thing some games like L4D2 run ok at around 60 but in others just the menu will get it cooking.

I will put a cooler on it but not sure yet what kind. Will the cooler off my 920 (coolmaster) fit on the new chip?

You are comparing a 920 with after market cooler to to a 2600K with default cooler and wonder why theres a big difference?
That should be self explanatory!

Also bear in mind that the 2600K is running 30% faster. and can process more per clock cycle as well so is doing a lot more work in the same time period.

ps your ambient temp and case cooling will affect temps too.
You havent given us this info.

Stock cooler is turd. When I had 2600K, temps got so high when encoding stuff that I just couldn't believe it (>80c).

Just fired up the old pc and compared the two. 920 running at 100 percent in some games got up to 62, 2600k in same game only goes to 50 percent and runs at 74. I agree the aftermarket cooler helps the 920 but should the 2600k run that hot at only 50 percent?

Also anyone know if I can just put the old cooler on the new chip?

Temp difference has already been explained more than adequately.
The cooler will fit ok if it fits the motherboard mounts.

Well, what's the exact model of your aftermarket cooler?

Come on, how can you expect a intel stock cooler to cool as well as a CM v8?

Yes I know that I was just supprised at how hot the 2600 ran with the stock cooler but I am finding that is the norm for this cpu.
I flashed the bios to the latest version and it brought the temps down about 5 degrees, must have been a setting or something in the old bios.
I will just order another V8 for this pc and that will take care of it.

yeah the take away here is not how hot the 2600k runs, but how crappy the stock cooler is.

But there's always room for a cheap case to make them even worse...
