With an i7-980x?

In terms of overclockability, and just overall power?

If overclocking is your prerogative, then go with the Core i7 2700K, it'll overclock a lot better.

Why exactly do you need an upgrade? The 980X is a fantastic chip.

I would say not worth it, look this bench

Sb-E would be a better investment and you can upgrade to Ib-E 8 core (16 threads)

I`m guessing a majority of those benches react better to the higher stock clock on the 3770k. would be better to see a clock for clock comparison
