Cool i5-2500k upgrade offer at discount - 04-30-2012, 15:42 | posts: 453 | Location: Denmark

Hello all.
I've been offered an i5-2500k sandy bridge at a 15-20% discount. I use my PC for gaming only. I play in resolution 1920x1080. My current Q9650 is about 3 years old and running @4.1Ghz. However I feel like my current rig can run all current games, so the only reason to upgrade would be to have a more "future proof" CPU and motherboard.

It might be hard to tell, but do you think an i5-2500k would last another 3-4 years, even with ivy bridge out?

If I buy the newest gen graphics cards (GTX 680 or 670ti or even 685), would an i5-2500k be a bottleneck, even if overclocked?

I see it does only have 6mb cache, how much will this matter?

Thanks

-Foamy4

EDIT: Only paying 35% of it's price. I said yes! Yes it's a legal buy

no a 2500k oc will not bottleneck a single card. I speak from experience owning a qx9650 at 4ghz in my backup rig, you will not be disapointed

2500k is a beast of a chip, you should notice a big step up from your c2q!

You worry too much. Get the board, processor and 1.5v DDR3 and enjoy.

BTW, there's nothing less satisfying than an OC that takes absolutely no effort to achieve....but damn if it aint beautiful to see it happen!!! =D

You will be fine. I usually design rigs to last 5 years. CPUs usually last the longest in an upgrade cycle. Just buy a good CPU and you won't need to worry ... and the Core i5 2500K is one of those good CPUs.

Go for it, Ivy Bridge barely bring more to the tablet if gaming is the main prerogative and if you don't feel like paying more, this is your combo.

yeah it really is the sweet spot for gaming right now, the architecture is so much more efficient than Core2 like you have. Don't forget to get a decent cooler for the chip.
