Default PC Locks Up with a buzz sound prior to, and requiring hard reset - 04-23-2012, 03:44 | posts: 761 | Location: Pacific Ring of Fire

Hi guys. I need help.

My PC locks up and requires a hard reset.

1.This happens after I hear a 1 second buzzing sound from the speaker
2.Only if I am connected to the internet.

Sometimes I hear the 1 second buzzing sound but it doesnt lock up my PC. The lock up happens only when I am connected to the internet via my HSPA Dongle (Wireless internet)

It doesnt matter what I do, gaming, browsing the internet or just putting it on idle, as long Im connected to the internet the lock up comes randomly.

It doesnt happen when Im gaming or any other CPU and GPU intensive tasks when i disconnect from the internet and remove my internet dongle.

Case lights, fans, CPU fans, video card fans are all functional during the lock up.

Is it somehow related to the signal from the wireless internet that causes some kind of interference? since I hear a 1 second buzz from my speakers before it locks up.

Any help would be much appreciated ^_^

The buzz is only an indication that the PC has crashed.

Try disabling power saving features on the network adapter, it might be a problem when changing power states.

Check if there is a firmware update for it and you have the latest driver.

I have heard of someone recently with this exact same problem, I just assumed it was either a hardware or software issue he was having (he's reasonably knowledgeable about computers). The problem was occurring when using the internet, via a wireless dongle to router, and having a video playing. It only occurred though when he was playing a video on the tv in the background and using the internet... sounds like the same kind of thing you are experiencing?

It only occurred when the video was playing, on pause the internet was fine. The browser he is using is Firefox.

Sometimes I hear the buzz but my PC does not crash. The buzz sounds like interference from, say... a cellphone signal. Like the one you hear when you put your phone next to a speaker and then you receive a message and you hear a small buzzing sound?

I'm not sure If I know how to do that. My internet dongle is connected via USB port.

Forgive my noobness.

I tried that too. I tried to update the program but there was no new update for the driver or the program itself :/

Its worth updating the sound driver.
Try putting the card in a different slot or refit it, blow any dust out.

In device manager under Network Adapters, you should find it.
Right click, Properties, Power Management tab.
Disable power saving.

Go here and find your driver
http://www.station-drivers.com/
If you arent sure how, tell use exactly which adapter you have and the driver version installed.

Im using this:
http://www1.smart.com.ph/Bro/products/power

Its a plug n play device (not sure if thats the correct term)
It automatically installs the program and driver when you plug it in..

I've had this dongle for almost a year now, and Ive only experienced this problem starting last month.

I don't recall installing any updates from microsoft.

The most recent driver update I did was when I installed the 296.xx driver from nvidia.

If the problem persists...

Does the same thing happen if you connect to the internet with a wired connection?
(remove the wireless connection)
If you can test this it will help.

I have been thinking of having a wire connection setup. Its just that I have gotten used to having the USB dongle since I only use it on weekends. I can use the internet here at work on weekdays so It would be a waste to hook up a connection at home and only being able to use it on weekends :/

Anyhows, I'll try that soon enough.

Hey thanks for the replies Mufflore
