Default FXAA and MLAA questions - 04-22-2012, 21:31 | posts: 172

Okay so FXAA injector says that it does not work in combination with other Anti-aliasing... but it works with downsampling.

IS MLAA anti-aliaisng a type of downsampling?

what i am asking is if FXAA injector works with MLAA?

I have MLAA turned on for my games and i am also running FXAA injector in games like GHOST Recon Advanced WARFIGHTER 1 +2

Unreal Tournment 3.... etc.

I think the games do look better with FXAA enabled... but i do have forced MLAA enabled at the same time. Games run fine.

So the real question is... MLAA is it working in combination with FXAA?

Nevermind...

the text says exactly:

This version is for Directx 9

May be incompatible with any other form of antialiasing!
Can be combined with downsampling!

The word "May" means that nobody can tell me unless i took screenshots with MLAA disabled and enabled to see if there is a difference....

It's a post processing filter, I've tried it and it combines with pretty much any form of AA but it doesn't look good.

MLAA looks shockingly terrible. FXAA and SMAA work way better (and on their own).

I'll have to compare screenshots cause when i used MLAA it looked wayyy better than no AA in those titles that dont use AA...
I havent tried SMAA though. I havent tried the FXAA injector without MLAA enabled either.

Yea I'm leaving FXAA/MLAA for titles that have no AA.

However its interesting that BF3 by default has Post Filtering as an option.
So far its the only game that i own that has it ingame setting.

I havent looked closely i just set everything to the highest setting... now im wondering if the post filtering in BF3 degrades quality?
Probably not but i can check.

BF3 post filtering is ~FXAA ya, there are like 15 other games that do similar so you dont need injectors for them

i dont know what you're using, but there are like 10 versions of FXAA injector, with dx9 & dx10/11 modes, & there's also SMAA injector which might be better quality

MLAA is a bit uglier than FXAA, there are comparison pics on various hardware sites, of course it beats no AA but why settle when there are better looking injectors right?

neither shouldnt technically affect other forms of AA, since the injector or the CCC setting happen AFTER the game renders, so that means any in game or driver forced MSAA setting happens before SMAA/FXAA/MLAA

come to think of it, i always keep adaptive AA off in games that have MSAA, so trees & other transparent things dont get any AA, maybe i should start injecting to improve the image without any performance hit
