Default slow wifi - 04-14-2012, 02:18 | posts: 7,931 | Location: Singapore

Hi, we moved house last week and the wifi is slow. turns out it is 802.11g and the reception inside our room is very poor. Would it be a good idea to buy a wifi range extender or is it just better to replace the router with an 802.11n?

My problem with buying a new router is if and when we move, and the new place has good wifi then the router will be redundant (we usually just stay a year or so in the flats we live in) hence Im looking at just getting a wifi range extender if it works

But will the newer extenders work with the 802.11g wifi?

fyi 802.11 doesn't go any further

but the quality maybe better at distance.

imo you should look to optomise the antenna posistion on the router and try changing the channel from the web interface. at the same time work out what obstructions (other than walls are in the way of the pc and if the pc is running a wireless dongle try getting it to the front of the pc`s usb ports or getting an usb extender wire from the back to the front.

failing that what not try some homeplugs?
if you really must range extend then fine, but id think investing in a better set of antenna for the pc end and correct position should help enough

What kind of antenna does the router have and how is it located in contrast to the room?
Channel should switch automatic on most modern routers to avoid overlapping with neighbor routers.

If you dont know how to change channels then there is a good chance you dont know how to encrypt your wifi signals,so there is a good chance that your network is open and people in the neighbour hood are leeching off it which can also slow your connection down.
