hmmm, HD7870 might be a good cross-grade from a HD6950... depending on price

That said, if you look around it seems the DP floating point is significantly lower (160 vs 563 (base, not unlock shaders on the HD6950). Pixel fillrate slightly higher, texture fillrate slightly lower...

I guess it all depends on benchmarks and overclockability. The power saving is a little attractive, if you can successfully put some of that towards overclocking :)

Why crossgrade you may ask? well, if the price is right, the Asus HD6950 DCII should still sell for a reasonable price, and even if I have to pay say, $50 for a possibly slightly better HD7870 now, the saleability of the HD7870 would probably get me more than the $50 back once the HD8000 series comes out :). It will make a difference come HD8000 time, since you're talking Directx 11.1 with Windows 8 (which the HD7870 has, the whole HD6000 series doesn't). Also another attractiveness then is the fact its PCI-E 3.0. Regardless of whether it makes a different or not, a typical buyer will see that as a difference (say on Ebay).

Laughable AMD marketing stunt. According to this the 7870 is better than the 7970.

Anyone wanna bet AMD has PhysX turned ON in Batman? AGAIN
As per Official AMD 7970 Benchmarking Guide!

Notice no AA in Batman and Deus Ex? How silly is that?
Both Batman AC and Deus EX are low VRAM hitters.

But GCN does not like MSAA when competition is not VRAM exhausted, so it's turned OFF.

Then notice heavy VRAM hitters, like CoP, Civ 5, and Metro 2033 have MSAA x4 - on 25x16 no less.
So yeah laughable marketing stunt. Turn on PhysX, tank competition VRAM silly and anything is possible.

Bringing technology to the people my $#@&.
AMD fully deserves spanking they are about to get, and it has already begun on laptops.

If Physx is turned on in those benchmarks as so claimed, does it mean GPU physx on Nvidia and CPU physx on AMD?

So your point is? Its a mid range card, what did you expect..

And imo its a fine card, it beats 6970 with higher mem bus and more shaders, even fights with 580gtx.

Yeah a lot care about uber high reso..

If you look at guru3d review it scales well at 1080p and shows pretty much the same perf. like those leaks..

Anyway it doesnt matter anymore the reviews are live and those leaks were just leaks.

but... but... 25x16 resolution is the one from leaks.
same settings 4xAA, 16xAF, same game, and it's nowhere near +60%.

    I give up...

everything is on track like on those leaks , and your crippled GF110 got stomped all over the place :D

Let me ask you something, every time AMD comes out with a new product are you going to bash it?

    I'm not a hater,
But there is nothing to love about new arch, whole nod, and doubled transistor density getting all spent somewhere,

and only 4%/10% channeled to to customer.

How can I possibly answer you that...
But if they are trying to pass 110% as 140%, you bet I'm gonna call them out.

I just read elsewhere the starting price of the HD7870 is higher than the starting price of the HD6970. If thats the case, I won't be crossgrading the cards.

Its a ballsy move by AMD to make short term profit, it could drastically backfire on them. If Nvidia performs well and AMD have to reduce their prices to match performance/price ratio, everyone who had purchased a card before the price drop will feel extremely peeved, and probably put them off purchasing another AMD graphics product for their next upgrade. Why would they, when think the price is going to fall significantly 2 months later, making their purchasing look foolish.

    Sep, 2009 -> HD 5850 - $259

2.5 years, whole nod, and two architectures down the line,
for the same money you're getting 7850 <-- 20-30% faster product.

    Small die philosophy (HD4000, 5000, 6000)
looked good on paper but it also caused brand erosion.

What AMD is trying to do, is raise perceived value of their products.
Price itself being one of the factors.

So they are going to overcharge discrete, and if Nvidia accepts,
that will automatically raise the value of their bloodline - APUs.

At least while Intel is not there (yet).
