Default HP laptop memory parity error - 02-18-2012, 16:35 | posts: 1,044 | Location: Mars

Hi gurus!

Since 2009 that I´ve a HP laptop with the following specs:

Core2Duo T7500
Kingston 4G RAM
Nvidia 8400M GS
HDD 5400ropm 250G
Windows 7 64 bit

The laptop has been working just fine until a few days ago when it started to turn the display completely black while continuing to work normally or simply freezing. The issue has now aggravated and now the laptop simply freezes when booting or a few minutes after it entered the OS screen.
One time it displayed the following message:

*** Hardware Malfunction
Call your hardware vendor for support
NMI: Parity Check/Memory Parity Error
*** The system has halted ***

I´ve already tried to update some drivers but it didn´t work.

What should I do know??? Should I try some different RAM?

Thanks in advance!

Download Mem86+ burn to disk and test both mem modules one at a time to find which one is bad.

I'm probably off track, but if your mem tests ok and your looking to further work out what it could be..

In July 2008 Nvidia confirmed faulty 8400M / 8600M video chips that affected many brands of laptops.

If you do a google search on "8400M fault" you get many hits telling of the woes of many consumers with different brands and models of laptops using those chips that have failed.

as mentioned above,a memtest will be first thing to do.
however,as Smashly suggested, maybe it is a faulty /prone to fail Nvidia chip.

Hi guys,

after some testing it seems the problem is really the GPU that is now dead or almost dead...

I wonder if Ivy Bridge laptops are going to take long to show up for sale....

Anyway thanks for the replies!
