Default HD6870x2 (crossfire 6870) stutter problem - 02-04-2012, 17:15 | posts: 28 | Location: Budapest

Hi

I recently bought this card. Using it with Catalyst 12.1. I saw a Guru3D review with this card.

http://www.guru3d.com/article/club3d...0-x2-review/17

At here Crysis 2 plays :

DirectX 11
High Resolution Texture Pack
Ultra Quality settings
4x AA
Level - Times Square (2 minute custom time demo)

AVG 55 FPS

I used the exact same benchmark suite-settings-map.

AVG 27.8 FPS

Stutters like hell, i checked things in BF3, i cant play the game textured set higher than Medium in FullHD, because FPS drops.

I know the memory is only 2x1GB, but why could Guru3D run it with hi-res textures 4xaa with that high FPS, and i cannot? Suggestion? Check with their driver?

- Then why could the test sites run it smooth with the same card?

- And if i turn off crossfire, benchmark finish with the same AVG FPS without fps drops.

Don't use 12.1, it sucks for many games. Try either the same driver Hilbert Hagedoorn used back in July 2011, or a new beta driver.

What agent-ao1 and CLass said. 450w is barely enough honestly for one 6870 n an i7 860 cpu oced.

Hehe... with 11.6, from AVG 30 -> 6 !!

I installed the CAP used when 11.6 came out, same result. So... now the 12.1 + latest CAP, i dont care about the whole thing, my last call is the RAM, i'll upgrade to 6GB or 8GB.

BTW, my PSU is enough i think, but as soon as i found my energy meter i will post Wattage results too

BF3 1920x1080, textures Medium, AF - AA off, FXAA injector, 64 man karkand, min-max fps is 60, so im satisfied, but of course high or ultra textures would be better

You should take the advice of the people here about your PSU. I'm sure your PSU has treated you well while you have had it, but it is not enough for your current card. You may "think" it's fine, but we are pointing this out to you because it isn't.

Please do not take it personal, we are trying to help you. You should get a minimum of a solid brand PSU such as Corsair for example of 650-700 watt. Make sure it has the correct amps needed as well. You are OC'ing your CPU which again stresses the PSU, and uses more amps/wattage.

You have to understand you are using 2 GPU's on that one PCB. It's not just one GPU you are feeding power to. You also have to understand that you need to feed power to all your other components as well. Right now you are stressing that PSU.

That sounds better at least. I was surprised you were running you rig with 450W psu. Now with a good branded 600W your system will be more satisfied imo.

Post your results back

Installed Chieftec A-80 CTG-600-80P 600W (504w 12v 42A)

Nothing changed in Crysis 2 benchmark, same crappy low FPS. I hope some Guru3D tester tell me the truth about the review results...

Checked with BF3 Multi too, same vram limitation happened. But if i turn off crossfire stutter goes away.

try d3d overrider for vsync, on. test out fps, with tripple buffering on , and off. see how it varies. i find tripple buffering on, helps bf3.. feels smoother. also no AA with these cards 6870's cant handle it.. you lose to many fps.. and not enough vram. another and probably the worst factor is the drivers your using.. with caps. mixed results with 12.* series of drivers, test out older 11.11. also in bf3, dont use ultra.. just use high.

Try an older driver and CAP release ... the card should run this fine. I have seen Crysis degrade in perfformance in the past couple of driver releases.

I tried the same catalyst (11.6) used in the Guru3D test, and it became worse in Crysis 2... I dont use VSYNC at all, i dont like input lag and performance hit, so i dont need triple buffer, but its enabled in BF3, VSYNC is disabled in CCC. I limit the FPS in BF3 to 60.

I have to use BF3 with Medium textures. I dont use any AA of AF, only FXAA injector, FullHD. Afterburner says max VRAM usage was 1900mb.

Yeah I'm not really sure what is going on. Your FPS is roughly half of what it should be, indicating that one GPU is not kicking in.

Verify with MSI AfterBurner that get full and a balanced GPU load on both GPUs with the benchmark.

Make sure all software incl windows and the benchmark suite is up-to date and legit.

Also do you see weird performance in just this game, or others as well ?

My PSU is upgraded to Chieftec CTG-600-80P, so that wont bottleneck. Im checking GPU usage always, at Crysis 2 timedemo 65-70% on both GPU.

My windows 7 64bit is up to date, i have all the update installed, latest whql catalyst and cap installed. BF3 multi have just the same performance hit with texture set higher then "Medium". I know BF3 multi with 64 player can be overkill with 1gb vram, but crysis 2 must run the same speed as in the review. My next idea is the system ram... i'll add another 4gb corsair vengeance 1600 ddr3, maybe...

I ran the crysis 2 bench with crossfirex disabled, and got 35.1 fps, almost the same as the review. With crossfirex enabled 29.1 fps. I dont know now where to...

Disable ULPS in the registry, see if that helps. I have HD6870x2 and every driver I install I always disable ULPS and reboot, never experience stuttering of any noticable sort.
