Default 6990M SWTOR performace - 01-10-2012, 22:11 | posts: 15

Hi.
First, my specs:
  • Clevo 150 laptop
  • AMD Radeon HD 6990M 2GB GDDR5
  • INTEL Core i7-2760QM Quad Core processor, 2.4GHz, 6MB SmartCache (SandyBridge)
  • 8GB RAM

I'd think this would run SWTOR great. Even at max settings. It does not.
Are there settings in any ATI software, specific game settings or in-game settings that can help performance?
It runs fine in flashpoints etc. But in large cities (even if there are few players around) and of course especially on the fleet, the fps stutters. It irritates, payed rather big bucks for this laptop in order to not have to worry about performance in games that aren't that demanding.
Any advice?
I'm using the 11.11 WHQL drivers btw

Hi,

I just the same laptop for gaming purposes and am using the 12.1a drivers over the clevo ones. My advice is to 1st try the clevo drivers (the ones that came on the CD or download from clevo ftp) or, try the 12.1a ones.

I personally have better results with the 12.1a

Congrats with that nice purchase :p

How does it run on your end? Settings and fps? Approximately

I dont have SWTOR but performance wise the laptop does very well. BF3 I play on high and get min 40's to max 80's or more fps. The game runs smooth and that's what counts. On ultra there is a small delay which shows as sort of ghosting when moving fast.

Dont mind lowering the settings a bit to get sweet smooth gamers performance

F1 2011 1080p on high smooth 40 to 50 fps
dirt3 1080p on high around the same

Are you sure its not just a new MMO having lag? Usually they do in the places you described.

Something strange happened. I went into the Catalyst Control Centre (for the first time, I'm new to this) and put a slider in "game performance" I think to performance in stead of in the middle (between performance and quality) and voilá, game runs smooth as silk on max settings.
I even monitored the temp, and it doesn't get much hotter than before.
Loading times are cut in half and even the fleet doesn't lag. I'm finally satisfied!

EDIT: I've now activated AMD Overdrive, but I'm cautious as this is new territory for me. The settings are:
  • GPU with high performance: 600MHz
  • Memory with high performance 900MHz (lowest)
  • Manual fan control not activated
With this on, the computer's fans runs more intensively, but the temperature is rarely, if at all, above 79 celsius. I was told on a different forum that the temperature is fine as long as it's not above 80 celsius for an extended time.
Please alert me if I'm doing something wrong, or if you have some recommended settings for. The game runs good with the AMD Overdrive off as well, so it's not that big of deal. I just figured it might as well be on as long as the temperature stays like it does.
Anyone have any advice/input concerning this? Hope I'm not doing anything wrong
EDIT*2: Seems the temp is a tad lower when the AMD Overdrive is turned on. I'm in a little over my head now! Would really appreciate it if anyone could give me a "do this, do not do this" concerning Control Center settings

I wouldnt get too caught up in troubleshooting it, wait till they fix it. Runs crap on everything. Shadows and Bloom cause massive choppyness, turn them off.
Texture settings still reversed. Texture Anisotropy seems to do nothing other than cane FPS, AA not working correctly (at all on ATI)... etc etc.

Works better with nvidia... 460 gets 70 fps, 30 on the fleet maxed.

bioware has confirmed performance issues with swtor and that they're working on improving it. hopefully something in the next big patch (1.1) will help. it's already implemented in the public test server. may be you can try that out and see if you still have performance issues.

Your problem is strange. I'm running a 6870 2GB card at ultra high resolution with everything turned up, even some things not in the in game preferences via the .ini file and get around 40 fps with no stutters. I run eyefinity across 3 monitors at 4800x900.

The only thing that comes to mind is you might be playing on wifi with a laggy connection. My latency stays below 40ms, which probably helps my experience. If you are using wifi, try pluging in and see if the lag reduces.

I'm using the 12.1 drivers, not 12.1a.

12.1 is certainly better, im surprised you can get that fps at that res though, I guess not every amd user is having issues.
