Default Core i5 2320 - good upgrade from my current? - 11-29-2011, 11:34 | posts: 761 | Location: Pacific Ring of Fire

Hi guys. I was thinking of upgrading to a

Intel® Core™ i5-2320 Processor
(6M Cache, 3.00 GHz)

since its for a socket 1155 that means it a Sandy Bridge right?

Our local computer store is selling it for a price of only $140 (Christmas sale)
compared to its original price of $180+ish

so will it be a huge upgrade from my Core 2 Quad Q8300?

It will be a very nice performance upgrade. Especially for that price. Just don't forget to get a S1155 motherboard too .

Here's a i5 2400 vs Q8400 comparison.

Hi....

Yeah Huge upgrade for me, Jumped from Core2duo e7200 to Core i5 2320 3GHz to 3.3GHz Turbo CPu, Nw Games are Stutter free, I bought an entry Level Asus P8H61 Mobo bcoz of Budget issues, no problems now running great, only issue im getting is low transfer rates to My Portable drive , My friend have also Asus Mobo on AMD Platform he is getting the same speed, When i was having my old Intel DP35DP Mobo USb Transfer Rate Was Maxed, Anyway try Z68,P67 or H67 Mobo......

Sounds promising! The store said that if I buy it together with the Asus P8H67-M LE H67 V/S/GL mobo i can get it all for only $210

No overclocking? So is it really true that with H67 chipsets it is impossible to overclock?

Or is what you mean - I can overclock it but not too much?

O_O

Darn, so overclocking is O%

The p67 mobo's are almost twice the price of the h67 one (T_T)

One question. I'm new to the Intel Turbo Boost technology in Sandy Bridges. It says that it can turbo boost up to 3.3 Ghz.

So it does that automatically?

Yeah, you need a K chip and P67 or Z68 motherboard to overclock the multiplier.
If you get a non K chip and/or an H67 board, you are limited to bus speed increases which will max at about 7% overclock if lucky.

with a z68 mobo youd probly be able to clock that i5-2320 Processor up to about 3.7ghz

Is that all 4 cores clocked or a single core?
How are you getting the +12% clock over the 3.3GHz Turbo mode?

Unfortunately, it wont be running all 4 cores.

check here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of..._note-turbo2-2
Look for the 2320 (1/3 to 1/2 way down)

Under the Turbo list, it shows 1/2/2/3
Those are the number of speed bins (additional 100MHz) you can have for 4/3/2/1 cores.
Max clock uses least cores.

Aww.. Okay I can accept that the i5-2320 cannot be overclocked.

I'm still buying it anyway since its super cheap and i need to replace my aging system sooner or later.

I don't really game that much anymore so I think the pro's still outweigh the cons for this processor.

Gonna be buying it tomorrow! Thanks for the replies and advice guys. ^_~

You'll love it
Not many games really need much more.
You should still be able to play with very good settings on Skyrim.

If you have an SSD, installing to that will help some games run even smoother.

And just in the nick of time! I've just been reading about how AMD is giving up on the CPU market. Sure enough, the prices of these chips will rise.

With that I'm gonna scoot on over the computer shop tonight and buy it

Sadly SSD prices in my place are soooooo high. It takes a while for the prices to drop down to acceptable rates so I think I'll wait for that.

AMD isn't "giving up on the cpu market"....they are simply redirecting their focus. From my understanding, they will still be selling desktop processors, but are simply afirming their previous statements that they have no intention of trying to compete against Intel.

You can overclock non K chips up to 4 bins (400mhz) higher than the highest turbo frequency, but you will still need a P67/Z68 motherboard if I am not mistaken.

Yep, non-K CPUs can be overclocked up to 400MHz. As for motherboard, I wouldn't recommend an H67, but if it's all you get, it's good enough and gets the job done. Do try, however, to get a P67 mobo instead.

There's really no advantage to P67 over H67 unless you plan to use Crossfire/SLI or overclocking. H67 has the advantage of supporting the integrated graphics in the event of the dedicated GPU failing. Z68, on the other hand, has the benefits of both the P67 and H67 "chipsets"...
