That's because the installer generally unpacks/copies the files to the temp folder then installs them to a specific location and afterwards deletes the temp files. So generally the space requirements are doubled to include the temp files used during installation.

EDIT: do you have SP1 installed? if not, install it. if you can't be arsed with that, try xpsp3 compatibility mode to install. Report back

Don't take this the wrong way, but you are using a legit copy of Windows, right? I'm only asking because this guy I know had the same problem when SC2 cam out. Come to find out, he has a pirated version of Vista installed and for some reason, SC2 would not install. I eventually got him a legit OS and once that was done and taken care of, the game finally installed. Not saying that's the cause of your problem, but I had to ask.

Doesn't Diablo III have a custom install?
I tried installing the game from the digital files I downloaded last week but was getting some kind of time out error (qu'elle surprise!) so I decided to try the retail disc instead. That does work but after registering the key on the Battle.net site I was surprised to find the game 'installing' itself to a folder on my boot SSD called Diablo III.tmp without me having told it to proceed!

Honestly as long as its the official download files, it shouldn't really matter where they came from.

Did you get Release-Date shipping?
If so most likely they'll send it last minute as overnight delivery, which is what they're doing with mine (non-UK).
