Question Backup HDD and restore on SSD - 10-22-2011, 00:38 | posts: 698 | Location: h4x0r_lund

In a nutshell that's what I want.

One of my clients wants to get a SSD and run his OS and all apps off of it, but he can't reinstall all of the drivers/apps he currently has installed.

Basically I need a way of backing up his system and restoring it on another drive.

Is there a way to do this in Windows 7 or do I need to use Norton Ghost?

I don't know that Windows 7 backup can restore computer like Apple time machine..

I use Acronis True Image Home 2011 to do this. Just remember, if you are putting the SSD install on a non-SSD drive, you are going to have to change some Windows settings afterwards.

I have used this on numerous systems with great results. Helps if you have a hot swapable external drive too.

Only Media Center's Recorded TV folder is excluded for obvious reason (back up manually) and you can't uninstall installed updates (since those will be excluded as well).

I've used it many times to restore my OS partition (works great for RAID systems).

Acronis TrueImage Home 2012 is out now....time to upgrade!! =D

Seriously, I think Acronis TrueImage is probably the easiest backup/recovery app I've ever used. It's also reasonably priced ($50USD)
